Advice: 1st Amp Build - Mojotone 1978 Brit Style 50w JMP

I like shielded wire on both grids of v1 and the 68k connected to the tube socket not the input jack. I don’t like the optional cap on v1 but that’s easy to remove. I also like to heat shrink the 470k/470p cap from the low jack to the gain pot as it can get a bit noisy.

    1977 JMP 2204 master/preamp volume ???

Two things I can think of… 1: the pot is messed up. I’d check the resistance of the pot and the taper from off to on. 2: I’d check to make sure it’s hooked up right. Middle lug of the trebble pot should go to the left side of the master pot and the center lug on the master should go to a...

Mesa mark 2/3 faceplates. How much is too much?

    I will for sure

Mesa mark 2/3 faceplates. How much is too much?

Not yet, I have most everything ready to go in terms of files but finding a manufacturer is a bit of a challenge. That and I need to buy a non GEQ model so I can get information together for guys converting their amps over from non GEQ to GEQ. Also probably need to get a long head just to cover...

Seems Marshall new ownership starting the downward slide to make more money.

If I were a rich man I’d buy Dagnal’s tooling just to troll Marshall. It’s amazing how stupid and out of touch PE ownership can be, the only edge Marshall had on cloners was their transformers. But hey, we saved 3% on unit costs!

RigTalk Library - Rock and Metal Books (Suggestions Needed)

Van Halen rising by Greg Renhoff is great all around, focusing on the band members from a young age through the first album if I remember. All around feel good story. Runnin with the devil by Noel Monk is also great and focuses on the band from 1980ish to the 1984 tour. A bit dark. Weird...

Advice: 1st Amp Build - Mojotone 1978 Brit Style 50w JMP

So with the above picture you will have to buy a tool to bias the powertubes. The one ohm resistor allows you to measure voltage across it much like a biasing tool allows you to do, except you don’t have to break the circuit with the one ohm resistors.

Advice: 1st Amp Build - Mojotone 1978 Brit Style 50w JMP

Yup that 1ohm resistor(s) allows you to bias the amp without a special tool, you can substitute them for just a straight piece of wire to ground if you don’t want to use them. You do you, but I find if your gonna tweak something point to point boards make it so much easier. It really sucks...

NFB in 2203, which OT tap to use?

Believe they started with 4ohms on the jmp’s and moved to 8 ohms on the later 800’s. If I remember correctly when they shipped amps with 6550’s 4ohm was standard, then when EL34’s were used again they switched back to 8ohm.

Louder than usual here this afternoon...

Hell yeah dude, not sure if you’ve played any of the older superleads reissues but I wonder how it compares. Not sure if yours has the new transformers in it and I’d be curious to see how it is.

Did I just fry my tubes?

I have a hard time believing they actually got up to 170ma and didn’t blow given the limited range of most bias pots, but I don’t know bogner’s very well. I bet they’re fine. I once forgot to connect some stuff properly and ran a new set of el34’s as hot as possible for about the same amount of...

    Let’s argue about impedance mismatch

This is what I follow take it for what you will. Amp set to 4ohm and your good for 4 and 8 ohm cabs. 8 ohm amp and your good for 8 and 16ohm cabs. 16ohm amp goes to 16ohm cab. Ideally you’d have them match. Personally I’d worry more about the original screen grids, bias filter caps, and...

Western Electric USA Made 12AX7 Updates

This is where I got that number from, https://www.wired.com/story/one-mans-quest-to-revive-the-great-american-vacuum-tube/ Sorta related but I emailed them about manufacturing tubes the day all the stuff popped off in march of 2022 and heard back from Charles Whitener within the day which was...

Who CURRENTLY does mods and is reliable?

Kinda depends where you are since the Jose thing is well known although that the one you mentions a little bit different with the parallel grid. No sense in shipping across the country to person X when person Y could do the same an hour away. Id say Dave and Trace know that exact amp the best as...

    No gain lotta pain

Some pics would help as a ton of them were modded. Maybe some resistor values drifted up or theirs some weirdness with the gain pot, maybe try wiggling it around to see if it cuts in and out or crackles. Is there any change in volume or sound between the low and high input? And have you played...

Tube Testers ....... what are you guys using ????

I let god and v1 of my jet city sort them out. Outside of that the amplitrex testers are super cool, take a while to test tubes but they give you just about every number you could want. Insanely expensive though if tubes aren’t your business.

What's your favorite modded / hot rodded Marshall?

I like the one I built. It’s not really true to most Marshall’s but is kinda a middle ground between what I like about Marshall’s and mesas. Here’s an iPhone clip, with some shitty noodling.

JCA100/50 mod - heater hum fix?

I’d double check values, IE make sure that 470k isn’t a 470ohm and other little stuff like that that bites you. Also try another tube in v2. If that dosent work I’d disconnect the grid of v2 on both sides (one at a time) working towards the PI, Tap around to narrow the noise down to one half of...

    Music gear sales dead.

I did some math based on receipts I had from before we printed a bunch of money. Everything’s up 25-35% minimum for the most part. Not to mention how housing and cars are insane. For the average dude youve effectively cut all disposable income. That being said I think a lot of people have what...

    Les Paul advice

I think the lawsuit les Paul’s rule as a guy with a LPC and studio, not even factoring in a great one is half or a third the price of a comparable Gibson. I’d look at a lawsuit custom with a ebony board. I can’t remember but I’m pretty sure you can find them with maple necks as well which is a plus.
