I dig how you “smolder” the notes into the bottom end tonalities—metal shimmer.
While showcasing the raw throaty-ness and unshakable midrange of a Marshall amplifier.
I actually turned on Van Halen D.O.A and rocked out on drums at 4am after listening man.
I was jonesin’ for more of that kick ass Marshall!
EVH owns the A chord.
Gotta give props to Mike A with the steady fat
bass guitar lines..and Al with that ‘greasy magic”.

That sounds killer! Ever since I built my '68 Superbass and '69 Superlead clones and run them thru a PS2 (often variac'd) I haven't wanted for any amps. That sound has always been my base and now that it's so easy and convenient I'm still drunk on it.

The only reissues to come even close were in the late 80s when they were first ever reissued. In the early 90s the second time they reissued, the early ones had leftover transformer cores from the very first reissues in the 80s. Every single one after that to this day fall short and are good enough for gigging or modding, but certainly not sitting in a studio. Nik at ceriatone and George at Metropoulos can build a better Marshall clone than Marshall these days. They will at least have mojo, but not as much as the video above.
Buddy, you are on the money with the transformer cores comment.
One of the many examples would be Mesa and the
Shoemaker transformers.
Wizards are another glowing example.

Boom, there it is.

I finally went all in on a SL67, ps2 and a couple drive pedals for flavor...nothing else feels as good under the fingers.

As others have said just great stuff. You could play almost anything with that tone. No clean channel needed as a tone like that will make better cleans by just using guitar volume. It’ll definitely retain enough brightness.

Very, very awesome!!!

The volume is around 6-7 in that clip. The second channel volume is around 4. Hard driver mentioned this in the past and I didn’t realize it until he did, but the second channel volume level affects the sound when on the bright channel. It’s alters the resistance of the mixer resistor.
That's the "TONE" isn't it.... I'm not sure what exactly Marshall was doing or not doing in the 1967-1972 era but there was something going on in this era... I expect with the transformers mostly as while modern replicas get close without those transformers they seem to fall a little short sometimes even with 100% NOS parts but with modern transformer equivalents.

67-72 seems to be the golden age for when amps just happen to sound like this clip and it seems not even all of them in this era sounded like this, some were gainy and some were cleaner sounding depending on the amp. You always hear people say... "My superlead don't sound like that or have that much gain."

I had a 1970 or 71 50 watter all stock in 1997 and it was the cleanest sounding Marshall I ever heard, I was expecting Schenker tones when I bought that amp boy was I disappointed. I should have kept for it''s collector factor but the amp just didn't have the mojo.

That's a great comment! Love it!

I still can't get Chris Merren to respond to my emails or voicemails. ClassicTone is gone, Mercury's prices are stupid. I've checked with a few others. I've heard from some good sources that Hammonds will get it done. I have one in my '79 2203 (blew PT a while back). I can't hear a difference. I want to do a new build and may go with Hammond.

How long has it been trying to reach Chris?
Chris is working a full time job, does transformers on the side, has a family, and is finishing up a masters. Dudes super busy - I’d give him time or look elsewhere.
