Shockingly, they are out there :)

I am now looking for the perfect boost for my new '83 JCM 800 2003.
I've tried so many. The Jam Ray for $100 is what I'd recommend. I like it better than my Timmy, Klon, and all the regular boosts. It's basically a modded Timmy, little tighter and more compressed. Perfect for driving that Marshall.

Was goofing around with an SG, Timmy and 2204

It's probably my fav pedal for boosting a Marshall. And a bunch of other stuff. It's like a Swiss Army Knife overdrive.
I've been playing superstrats a lot lately. Feels good to fondle a Gibson!

So which Timmy is this? The one I bought sounded like total shit. This was "new", about 3-4 years ago.

This one. Don't remember which dealer I bought it from. It basically sounds and behaves like all the other Timmys and Tim I had. The pic shows my normal settings for boosting a crunchy amp. The bass knob at 2 o'clock is actually quite a bit of bass reduction. The bass and treble knobs work in reverse. So, 7 o'clock would be full on bass and treble. Anything clockwise is subtracting those frequencies. Bass is pre gain. Bass at 1-2 o'clock is a bit fatter than tube screamer territory, kinda like a Klon with the gain at 9 o'clock, but tighter than both. And the Jam Ray is even tighter. Just got mine home and will be working on a video.

I also use this pedal as a super clean boost, slightly compressed but totally transparent boost, and a stand alone od.
It is the Swiss Army knife of OD pedals.

I’ve got an older one and it also sounds killer. They sound like your amp but just more of it. If your amp sounds like shit, the pedal‘s not gonna help

What’s better? Dirty Tree or Timmy? The forum seems split…

Same. I bought one about 12 months ago based on the reputation it has and I hate it every time I've tried to give it a fresh go. Ice picks in the ears for me no matter how I set it. I prefer my Klon or TS10 to boost. Maybe I should try it again as a Marshall boost or maybe I should just let it go back into the wild.

I think I had a V3.
There's definitely been some changes, as most who have the older ones rave, and many with the newer ones say they sound shitty.

That really sounds great now you have me thinking about that pedal. More GAS, just what I need ?

I know there were slight changes with the different versions but I never knew of any sounding like shit. I can’t speak for the mini MXR version though

Thing with Timmy's and their clones is to make sure you've figured out which way the bass/treble pots go. Like @LPMojoGL said, they traditionally are wired "reverse" since I think they are cut only: fully counter-clockwise is max bass/treble, and you turn them clockwise to cut the respective frequency. But I thought some Timmy versions had this reversed, which I could see throwing someone off if trying to do a quick demo of it.

Yep, well known. But, the Timmy I had was mud city, and you couldn't get rid of it! Certainly wasn't user error, the guy I sold it to hated it as well. It was way too warm/dark/woofy. Even with cutting the bass a good bit. That pedal sounded awful.

Wow, I wonder what's going with the newer Timmys? Yours was muddy, philhouse says his is ice pick...
I'm curious to see the different builds, what different parts in each pedal. Could it be down to different chips?

I'm not sure either. I haven't opened it up but I'm wondering if someone has twiddled with some trim pots (if there are any in this pedal?)
Mine is a V2 with the pretty Blue swirl, looks great but not sounding best for me yet.
I'll def give it another try today on good faith of others experience's in this thread. I was trying it into a clean channel to get some nice overdrive, perhaps I need to look at from a boost angle. Always happy to learn.

I always found the Timmy worked best boosting an already overdriven amp

I've had 2 of these for quite awhile. Great pedal for sure
