They didn’t just “happen to be listening”. The US has sophisticated, classified sonar monitoring world wide. Particularly in the Atlantic and Pacific.

There are Russian and Chinese nuclear subs to track you know. Whales, dolphins, and the occassional submerssible implosion are just bonuses. They can detect a sailor inside of a nuclear submarine farting, talking, etc.

I knew that the Navy knew precisely how, when, and where the submerssible had met its fate when they were able to find the debris field within 3 hours of getting an ROV to the bottom.

It took more than 70 years to find the wreckage of the Titanic… with the exact grid co-ordinates of the sinking being well documented, but they were able to find the debris field from a much smaller submersiible in just 3 hours... because the Navy had told them precisely where it was.

And yes, sonar monitoring works at that depth. Energy does propagate through water and that energy is detectable. Physics 101.

For that matter, the Navy has done quite a bit of research on using low frequency energy at extreme depths as the foundation of a global communication network for submarines operating at depth. This research is based on communication capabilities discovered in whales. I do not know if such a system was ever operationalized.
