250kΩ Volume Pot vs. 500kΩ

I have a 500kΩ in there now.. it's starting to make static/scratching noises.

Ordered both last night, 250 & 500

I'm happy with the 500, but in the past some folks have recommended a 250

FWIW, I sprayed the pot with DeoxIT D5, and it did clear up a lot of the noise, but I do a lot of volume swell stuff, so I think the pot it just worn out.

If the cleaner doesn't work (sometimes that's all that's needed on occasion), I'd suggest a Dimarzio 500k.

The cleaner/lube spray did help, but if I tap the volume knob it makes a "pop" come thru the rig.

If I jiggle the volume knob, it make static noises that follow the movement.

I ordered "Bourns" mini pots. I deduced the ones in there are about 10 years old (if not older).

Currently have a 500kΩ volume pot in a guitar with a JB style humbucker.

What differences am I going to hear by switching to a 250kΩ volume pot ?

It’s been years since I tried the JB with a 250k pot in a Strat style guitar but I just remember it sounding kinda lifeless and dull . I much preferred it with a 500k pot

That's the one I was thinking about.

Jim speculates Ed took the volume pot from the Strat and just connected the humbucker.. which would give him a 250kΩ

1:35:35 He starts talking about the pickup I'm using - Jalen FW

1:46:14 He goes into the whole 250k pot thing.
I put the Jalen FW in one of my guitars last week with the 500k pot that’s been in there . Sounds killer cranked up thru my Splawns and my Blackstar Amped 1/SLO pedal rig

Yeah, It's a good pickup !

It's works great in my mahogany Dean ML with Floyd.

Lowering resistance to ground specifically lowers the resonant peak frequency’s amplitude. The JB was designed to go in a Tele that had two 250K pots so a single 250 is double the resistance and a 500 is quadruple!

I swear to God, half of you must be deaf.

I'd worry that a JB with a 1Meg volume could be pretty harsh in many situations.
Of course, it's different for every guitar, and some like it bright.
You can always roll off some treble.
But a higher resonant peak isn't simply more high end.

I fell for the 250k with a JB hype in my single hum Fender strat. It was mud city. Much better with 500k……but I’ve moved on to other pups since.

This thread is making me wonder if I should trying dropping 250k's into my Dirty Fingers+ equipped SG. Poor thing screeches like a banshee no matter what I do. 😿

I found a 350k pot in a box of random components, and soldered it in.

Changing nothing else in the rig, it does make a subtle tone difference.
