Just curious why people carry guns?

Seems like a catch 22, so I guess once the horse is out if the barn....everyone is fucked?
My guess is you don’t live or work in St. Louis, Chitcago, Baltimore, DC, Cincinnati, Cleveland or any large, democrat controlled urban area ?

No I don't live in those areas.

Just seems unbelievable that average folks feel so scared they need guns to do normal activities. Sad, but, obviously If it is that bad...I understand you have to try to protect yourselves .

And your families.

And scared might not be the right word. Choosing to be prepared to defend yourself doesn't mean you are scared.

most average folks are scared to carry a gun; they'd rather be victims I suppose, or they live where the totalitarians in charge deny citizens their 2A right, and any right to defend themselves, their loved ones and property.

I also find it interesting that cities with the most stringent 2A infringements seem to have the highest rates of gun violence.

Have you ever used your gun to defend yourself?

I worked in a Trauma center and one of my more memorable cases I was involved with was a police officer who was shot several times at close range by a criminal they ( more than one cop) were transporting who managed to get control of the officers gun.

Double edged swords imho.

no I haven't, and I hope I never do. If I have to, I've made sure I've practiced and prepared as much as I can. When I'm out and about, I try to have as much situational awareness as I can, and avoid what could be potentially dangerous situation. I avoid large crowds, protests, certain events, etc. that could easily get out of control.

I've been in a few situations where I wish I was armed and wasn't.

As far as your police story; it sounds like they let their guard down, were too comfortable or fell into a routine, perhaps even skipped a few steps because they did this frequently and nothing ever happened.

Like I said better to have and not need vs to need and not have.

Yeah, some cops need a lot more training than they have. Some only shoot once a year at quals. Usually the fat ones. I have an inordinate amount of friends who are cops. I train with cops. And soldiers. I am more highly trained than a lot of cops.

You clearly are asking all the questions an anti would. You are being civil I'll give you that. Still not sure why you would bother coming into the OT section of a right leaning site in a thread about guns and start making subtle, ridiculous insinuations, but......

Not gonna answer the question about having used a gun to defend myself ( clearly a loaded question right out of the Brady playbook), but I will turn it around a little and ask you a question. Have you ever been shot at ? I have. Multiple times. When someone tries to kill you when all you are doing is your job, you lose co-workers to murder for just doing their jobs or you come within 8" of losing your life while doing your job I suspect you may have a different opinion. Until then you will have to forgive me if I place no value on your opinion regarding my rights.

Never been shot at. I have family members who have been shot at while doing their jobs.

Not shitting on folks who carry to protect. But, If anyone thinks they cannot have their weapon taken from them and used against them....they are completely idiotic. Just takes the right situation and bad luck, don't care how big or well trained you think you are.

Any way stay safe out there.

No one said you couldn't. There are things you can and should do to mitigate that possibility/probability though. Why you would focus on that as a reason to choose not to be able to defend yourself in a life or death situation I don't understand. In fact it is why you should train if you are going to carry a gun. There are a lot of other things that are much more likely to go wrong and get you killed, although I admit that is something you need to be prepared at all times for. Especially if you are LE or tasked with openly carrying a firearm, which is the easiest way to get your gun taken from you. Complacence, lack of situational awareness, failure to understand when you should or shouldn't employ a deadly weapon ( OODA loop) failure to train repetitively. All things that can get you killed. Life is not a John Wick movie. When someone is trying to kill you you are not going to rise to the occasion, you are going to fall to the level of your training.

For most, the odds of ever having to use a gun to defend yourself or your family are small, but so are the odds of being attacked by an orangutan with a water cooled Barrett 50. But they are never zero. It is my job to be prepared as best I can to defend my family and myself. To quote Vito Corleone, women and children can afford to be careless, but not men.

many Americans are afraid to take responsibility for themselves and their families by using their 2A rights. as @Floyd Eye said you practice and prepare, the chances that my weapon will be used against me are low. shots would be fired before you got that close, and I practice hitting my targets under duress.

Freedom and responsibility, our Founding Fathers understood this. Unfortunately many Americans today want freedom but not the responsibility.

Worse case scenario. Imagine a home invasion where the 3-4 criminals are armed and you're not. they can do whatever they want to you, and your loved ones, just use your imagination; let's say you have teenage daughters, and you're unarmed and helpless as you hear them scream "daddy!" over and over again. How does that make you feel?

If you can't protect your loved ones, you have to live with that knowledge should you ever be in that position. I refuse to be a victim. I refuse to rely on others for my safety. When seconds count, the police are minutes, or more, away.

Thankfully in some states we have our freedom to exercise our 2A right or not; I choose to exercise my 2A right and responsibility.

Say goodbye to pistol brace bans and 80% bans.

I believe suppressors will be non NFA items soon too. I know a guy who just yesterday got his approved in a day and a half. Something’s happening.

VA Bureaucrat defies Congress, states he and the VA will not comply with legislation to restore a quarter of a million veteran's gun rights even if Congress passes the law.

The deep state wonks aren't even pretending to obey the Constitution or their sworn oath to it.
