4x12 for an SLO?

Interesting comments about the Soldano 4x12. I got one in a trade deal and hated it. I've never had an SLO though so maybe that would have been different.

Took me a year to sell it on CL and the buyer didn't have an SLO either, but he sure wanted my cab for his EVH 5153.

The Soldano Cab actually does have a pretty tight sound with plenty of punch for me (of course I use the DEPTH mod with it). The Uberschall sounds awesome thru the Soldano cab too....did a side by side comparison with a friends Ubercab and the Soldano cab blew it away with tone and feel.

I agree you don't see pros using Soldano cabs...Marshall cabs are on stages everywhere maybe because they're cheap and easy to find.

So I've got a line on a relatively cheap early 80s Marshall cab. I've got a line on another cab with Celestion Heritage G12H speakers, also very well priced.

Either would most likely work extremely well.

But I'm also wondering if the incredibly cool folks at Soldano will do something a little more custom, kind of like they did for these open-backed 1x12s...

(the color isn't the best here but you can see the open back configuration)

Perhaps I'll have to give them a call.

Well, I ordered a Soldano 4x12. Had to get it in navy blue to match, with their stock speakers (I think they sound great in my 2x12). Should be here in a couple weeks. I'm pretty stoked!

A Pair of 2x12's also sound pretty good

If you could find an old Hiwatt cab ;)
Good enough for Lynch!

Buy once, buy big =)

-I'm curious about an alnico speaker with a high gain amp!!... like those golds in the open back cabs

My SLO sound amazing with V-30, G12M 20w, EVM 12L, Scholz, cast frame Fanes, G12H 30w and Alnico Golds.
all you have to do you match either of these to the tone you want.
For a Mick Mars kind of tone the V30s are perfect. For a VH style, the G12M 20w are the ones to use.
For a more modern metal tone the EVMs are perfect. And for a nuke exploding near you kind of tone the Scholz are the ticket.
Of course, you can get a lot more with these speakers when matching them with the SLO.
Just make sure the master volume is above 2. It's loud, but it's when you start to hear the real SLO.
And what a beast of an amp to hear!!!

My favorite speakers with my SLO are Scumback M75-PVC 65 watts. I have them in a Splawn 4X12 and also in 2 Avatar contemporary 2X12s and am VERY happy with them with all of my amps. I actually just posted a clip of my SLO in my stereo rig with the Avatar 2X12s. It is a rough recording with a crappy camera mic, but hopefully it gives some idea.

Not sure why so many think V30's don't sound amazing with Soldanos and the SLO. Mike started out using V30 speakers in his cabs but changed due to production costs. Not sure why he states now he hates V30's since he designed and made alot of his amps and cabs around V30's. IMO it's alot of hype on Mike's part trying to sell what he currently sells in his cabs. It's business. IMO nothing else. He's hyping what he's using. Mike's a great guy but hyping what you use is part of business so I guess saying you dislike something majorly popular you do not use is business also.

IMO V30's sound awesome with all Soldanos and the SLO. There is a reason the V30 is the most popular and most used recorded and live speaker on the planet for many many years now.

Yeah, i think the v30 actually compliments the slo. Just depends on what you are looking for in tone i guess.

Strange Mike would use a different speaker personally than what he builds his cabs with. You would think as a builder you would want to put in your cabs what you personally feel best represents your amps.

I know it's a business and cost cutting sometimes has to happen but speaker to speaker the price difference isn't extreme enough IMO to not use what you feel is the best for your amps. Cab sales can be a huge part of a builders business. IMO if Mike would focus more on making his cabs better it would help greatly in sales.

I personally do not know of anyone that uses a Soldano amp with a Soldano cab. Most I know just do not like how the Soldano cabs perform live compared to other manufacturers cabs.

I've tried several different speakers with my Soldano and for me the V30 is my preference. My Bogner OS 2x12 (V30 loaded) with my Soldano just sounds insane.

The clip sounds awesome! I checked out the scumback speakers that you mentioned, they seem pretty cool! I may have to check them out.

By the way those VH riffs sound so dead on to my ears -- that Top of the World riff is making me want to bust out the Carnal Knowledge record right now...

By the way, I've got my SLO running on Tung Sol 7581A reissue tubes right now, and it's putting out about 120w. I was reading the description of the M75-PVC speakers on the scumback website. I had no idea paper voice coil speakers could spark and catch fire. I would probably need two 6x12 cabs!

Thanks! Stereo rig is a great way to run an SLO, or any amp really as far as I'm concerned. I would recommend getting the 65 watt M75-PVCs if you go that route. That is what I have in my 2X12s and one 4X12. They are great and they can take higher wattage while retaining solid bottom end and won't catch on fire!

I have never tried the Tung Sol 7581A. I'm running the Sovtek 5881s that Soldano ships the SLO with in that video. I have also tried the Preferred Series 6L6GC, which is basically just a 6L6GC-BSTR from what I can tell. They sound great in the SLO too. Better than the 5881 Sovteks in my opinion.
