Jimi was great and all, but not quite in my wheelhouse in regards to style/genre.
For me it was Tony Iommi who really changed things.

For me the EVH era is instead the Randy era.

Agreed. All these guys were from before I was born, but when I started guitar in high school Randy was my favorite one. Those other guitarists mentioned here may have been more game changing and influential, but Randy's musical ideas generally had a lot more depth and quality to the note choices, much more inspiring for me

both were milestones that changed guitar for me; same for Allan Holdsworth but he didn't seem to have as large an impact to the majority of guitarists in general, like Jimi and Ed. IMO

I say quality over quality. Tons of guitarists show huge influence from EVH and Hendrix, but I tend not to like as much most of those players nor the noodly wankfest style leadwork, while there are some players I like a lot who were influenced a lot from Holdsworth like the guy's in Meshuggah and Guthrie Govan. I would say Holdsworth was actually more advanced/ahead of his time than those guys in terms of the actual musical ideas, technique/his ability to play, but of course it wasn't as accessible, his sound wasn't as innovative and he didn't have the gimmicks like tapping, whammy, echoplex, wah, other fx, etc, but the right guys got him like the ones mentioned

when my uncle first introduced me to Hendrix music, Jimi was still alive; I saw EVH opening for Black Sabbath in '78 Never Say Die tour, and I saw Rhoads twice with Ozzy (Blizzard and Diary)... I remember getting Blizzard LP when it was released, because I and many of my friends were into Sabbath, so we knew the songs before we saw Ozzy live. VH came out of nowhere, no one in Connecticut ever heard of them until we saw them open for Sabbath, I got VH1 the next day or two after...we had a small indy music store, he had two copies of VH1 in the store, I bought one of the. It was the same for Ozzy, only a couple copies of Blizzard in the store...the owner knew I liked Sabbath and told me when he had Blizzard.

I think it's who you hear first, and when where and how. By the time I heard Rhoads, we'd already heard, and seen, EVH.

I heard EVH’s stuff first before Randy when I was 14. I was impressed by the alien sounding tapping at the time, but then a little later when I heard the first solo in Mr Crowley from Randy it was no contest to me in musicality
