I have a '80 Marshall JMP100 2203 (6550 tubes) and really prefer the Low Sensitivity Input. I like the cleaner tone more than the Overdriven preamp tone. I thought I would like the distortion more like a Randy Rhoads tone but it doesn't seem to have it. I thought about using a Maxon OD808 or a Soldano Hot Mod Tube for more umph.

I really like the clean tone so would I like the JTM45? Does the Plexi or 1959 breakup more. Mine get a great SRV tone with my Fender Strat but seems to lack the in the high gain department. It could just be that my Bogner 20th A Ecstasy gets more on ch 2 Plexi and Ch 3 of what I think a Marshall should be and more.

The JMP is a keeper for the clean alone.

We need a section just for Marshall amp users! Might help Marshall noobs like me.

the maxon would sound great with your 2203, as for the hot mod, they add a lot of noise, and as for the 1959 it would need to be cranked too break up at all, stick with your MV Marshall, just put EL 34's in it you will be glad you did

Should I get a 2 channel 2203 JCM800 with EL34s?

I like the JMP100 clean for SRV tones and I use a Gold Top Les Paul with the Burst Buckers and the other LP with the Alnico magnets. I would rather buy another one, than mod a 30 yr old amp. Im not unhappy with the amp. I will try the Maxon OD808 with it. Guess after hearing a KK JCM800 and my Bogner 20th X it seems more tame.

I will probably buy another Marshall, seems I buy amp brands in pairs, at least   Plexi, JCM800, JTM???? I favor the older Marshall before '85

changing it to EL34's isn't much of a mod, a resistor change, it should have had El34's in it anyway, the only reason Marshall went too 6550's was because they were getting a lot of breakage of the EL34's in shipping, 6550's are built more durable, the Marshall's in England made during this time came with EL34's

What's a JPM???

6550's Rock, i have two 2203 JMP's, one with EL's, one with 6550's, if i could have just one it would be 6550's.

Try a Marshall Vintage Modern. Marshall engineer Steve Dawson says it's the next evolutionary step from the JTM45.
