I thought I read that Jackson wound their own....those also went into the USA Jacksons by 86-87. The lower output J50, combined with that active boost system sounded killer.
I have a a JE-1000 preamp. A guy on eBay made some clones. I'm just waiting to find something to use it with.

Joe Holmes used the J-80. Those are really tough to find. What is not tough to find is the J-80C and you can easily swap out the magnet in there to an Alnico 5 and then you have a J-80. Or you can buy one of Grover Jackson's new Habanero pickups called the Naga Viper which is built to the same specs as the old J-80's and sounds great. It even has the digits "J80" in it's model number.

I have played many of the original J-80's (you really want the ones that have a Made In USA sticker on the bottom) but those sell for about $200-250 now and the new Habanero ones sound really great.

I had a Jackson SL2 from 1990; non swirl Erie Dess finish. One of the guitars I'd like back lol. Had that boost, I pulled the J50 for a Duncan Custom. Holy balls did that thing rip with that boost...and the boost was adjustable on a pot....great for easy control playing out when it was lead time.

I'm pretty sure Joe Holmes used the J-80. I have one, had it in one of my Strats, sounded awesome. Here's a pic of it, I sent Eddy Lentz another one I had and that's the one he has in his 70's Strat.
