I like all the guitarists mentioned here.
Ace is one of my guitar heros and I am definitely not in the 2nd grade.

Hey, then why do you have a juice box in your Dukes of Hazard lunch box.
That's The Six Million Dolllar Man lunch box thank you very much! :D

I have the original kiss lunch box. Not the "reissue." Took it to kindergarten each day!!

Yeah Ace isn't Petrucci. But those solos on Love Gun were great. They were melodic and memorable. Some times, it's the guys who can't blaze that actually play solos that fit the song. Ace did that. Maybe it was Gene and Paul who MADE him do that but who cares?

PS

Hammett does suck and I can play anything he ever wrote. So there.

-apologizing because some one isn't as "technically proficient" is the insight and huge blunder of what killed rock/metal/80's... Not nirvana, when you judge "good" by how fast you can sweep pick scales, its the reason we're talking about this on RIG TALK, a small nitche slice of the music scene....

-the sad part of this is most won't even see this as an insult, they'll go home a practice there scales as fast as they can.... That's how they measure "good"

-I think ACE today sucks, the "its painful to watch/listen" is the truth, but the ACE of the early years was just as good if not better than his peer's,... TED NUGENT "I've seen ACE be brilliant, then I've seen him be horrible, too much drugs I guess''

-I'd "listen"<----yeah,--i--like--to --actually--listen--to--music----not watch his fucking technique!!!!!.... To ACE over any shredder,.... I'd rather pull my finger nails out with vice grips that look at those self flatuating wankers and the boring, following all the rules with zero originality pieced of shit that some bow down to.

-someone post the clips of ACE doing the tapping, or the shock me solo ...

-
I've never heard Ace be any better than mediocre live be it '76 or now. I am not a person who judges on technical prowess, but there has to be a certain level of capability. I'm a huge Mick Taylor fan for example. Not a shredder, but what he did with the Stones when they were actually good was amazing from a phrasing standpoint and he could do it without all the slop...

wow...so much ACE hate....I don't understand

ACE hateRS. Something I could never comprehend are these purists motherfuckers who love to talk about how people suck. Ace proves that you don't have to be a stellar guitar player to be ONE OF THE BIGGEST GODDAMN ROCK STARS IN THE WORLD. I am not a Kiss fan or an Ace Frehley fan but you haters can get the fuck outa here with that bullshit.
I think Ace was an awesome rock star and a shitty guitar player.

Yes, he absolutely unequivocally in every way imaginable proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that you don't need to be a stellar guitar player to be ONE OF THE BIGGEST GODDAMN ROCK STARS IN THE WORLD.
Hell, you can be a magnificently shitty guitar player and be one. Proven many times...

Let's all remember that Kim Kardashian is one of the most famous, higher paid people in the world and she can't do one goddamn thing...

That basically hits the nail on the head. I really did love the Love Gun album though. Probably the best they were ever able to squeeze out of him. I was 12 at the time but the impression it made on me has lasted 38 years. It's amazing because he really is just... not good at playing guitar.

But in all honesty....
Steve got it and yes I do agree with this as well.

Ace Sucks, KISS sucks (they have a few good songs, I will gladly admit) BUT Hammett can play circles around ACE.

all the Hammett haters couldn't play a single fucking solo he did off of any of the first 3 metallica albums.
gtfoh with that bullshit.

Well, it seems as if millions of people around the world disagree with you about KISS sucking.

BUT, its your opinion and millions of people think it sucks just as much.

Let's make a list and put Ace at the top of it. I'll add the next name :)

Ace Frehley
Keith Richards

I said it in the Cliff Johnson post and I'll say it again. Some musicians just don't get it.

Writing great songs and hooks is all about creativity and playing parts that fit the song.

You see it on YouTube all the time, great technical skills they developed through today's access through the Internet. You can shoe someone what to play, but teaching someone how to improvise or be creative in a way that appeals to many people is hard to teach or learn.

Ace, Keith, Kurt, and Cliff wrote great parts to many songs that sold millions of copies.

Do you people really think Ace's playing and the parts he wrote on Kiss Live 1 suck???

Yeah, it is an opinion..... Just asking for an honest one.

Btw, check out the Wrecking Crew. They were mostly players from a Jazz and Bebop background. But, when they worked studio dates on many classic rock/pop songs, they played/created simple parts that fit the songs.

Maybe Ace, Keith, Kurt, and Cliff were better Musicians than players???

You're certainly missing what I'm saying.

Steve

Yeah we know. Ace can't play guitar. Sucks at theory . Has tone deaf ears.
Should never of stepped on stage. Plays caveman Rock.
Only appeals to 2nd graders.
Yet.....yet....
I still love the guy!
There was A thread here about 'who influenced you to play guitar?
Over half the posts put up Ace.
Again just my opinion. I respect others. So hope it's a 2 way street. ;)

I'm waiting to see Beavis and Butthead feature your video...............

All I know is I have always liked Ace's playing and tone. Plus he has a great hard rock mentality in the newer stuff he writes that is sorely lacking in most bands a 1/3rd his age. Long Live the Spaceman!!!

I also agree that Hammett on the first 3 is fucking awesome and what became of him afterwards should be featured on the iD channel like a cold case murder mystery!! Love the flow he gets on some of the extended solo's on Kill 'Em All. Plus one of the greatest aggressive tones on solo's ever.

I guarantee if most of the haters tried to play a solo over a Kiss backing track they would never come up with something more memorable or as fitting. Ace was not fortunate or lucky that he got into Kiss. Kiss was lucky that they found Ace.

I always say that it is unfair to compare Ace Frehley, Tony Iommi, Ritchie Blackmore, etc., etc. with current players because those early players created riffs without current technology and were starting something that had never been heard before. Ace isn't a technically gifted player but he had solos and riffs that worked with the song.

I look at a band like Dream Theater. As gifted as they are and awesome at their instruments, most people don't know who they even are. On top of that, I don't see girls at their concerts creaming their jeans when Petrucci does a run up the fretboard.

this is an interesting point. is it memorable just because of the time and repetition. A lot of people say its memorable, but why?
I mean if he had played something completely different and it was just as popular and so many people listened over and over during the years...would it still have anything to do with HIS choices in the moment, or just because the music got played a lot.

I mean, i have heard outtakes of zeppelin that are not like the album, could those takes been JUST AS MEMORABLE? if they were in fact used...??

i mean...what is REALLY memorable?
(and why?)
Eruption??

Are you trolling or do really not understand???

I will assume you don't get it, because of your recent posts on Cliff Johnson, TNT, and now Ace.

Phrasing that has a strong melodic theme or has a hook will resonate more with a listener and has a better chance of becoming "memorable".

A lot of successful musicians are talented at writing hooks and writing a solo that is melodic and catchy. Ace was mentioning in his interview he would incorporate themes or licks that he would return to in his solos.

TNT, Def Leppard, Winger, Journey, Poison, and other bands that went the "commercial" route knew they would attract more ladies and bigger audiences. Even Van Halen and Crue wanted a "Piece of The Action"

I play in a successful cover band and I understand as a musician it is usually a better choice to play what is right for the song and what people like to hear. When the girls are dancing, guys are buying drinks, the place is packed, it is a good thing.

I prefer playing Priest, UFO, Sabbath, Rush, Zep, AIC, STP, etc. Girls want to hear fun songs they can dance to. Clubs want people buying drinks. Sure, I can impress people playing Schenker note for note, but not too many ladies are going out Saturday nights want to hear that. My band gets gigs because we play songs that the people in the club want to hear.
