It's not to hard to figure out what gives him that tone, what's been in his rig since the beginning that's always on and its not his Marshall. Think about it...

Care to share?

Its the shitty DoD EQ.

Hehe, that's only on during leads

You guys are funny, talking about this stuff like its magical lol!
I guess I just need to find a super lead and plug my lpc into it to find out if that's what I am looking for or not.
Hey, we didn't start this thread ;)

Haha! Now who the hell did?
Who has a super lead for me to try? Please!

So alittle off topic but since Maynard refuses to put work in with Adam and the rest of the band and focuses on his wine and novelty band is TOOL done? Will we ever get another album? Call the fire department!

Adam is a genius. He puts post it notes on a dummy amp to lead people astray like EVH.

10 years from now people will realize he was using a stock Twin Reverb and a Tube Sceamer.
hahaaaa, yep

I actually heard a report this week that a member of the band was injured in a scooter accident which broke/fractured some ribs and possible a limb.
So writing and recording of the new album, which was currently taking place, has been stalled. Everybody's guess is that it was Maynard, since he seems the most "scooter like". Ha Ha!

Well, we know it wasn't Adam, since he was caught on camera last week proposing to his girlfriend at a WWWF match in AZ. Justin and Danny are too big for a scooter. Yes, it must be Maynard on the mend.

Their new album is half way complete, as reported.

I don't think it was Danny, I thought I saw him in NAMM pics?
Justin or Maynard would be most likely

"The New Year started off on a bad note as far as writing and arranging sessions for Tool’s next record. For the most part this was due to a ‘minor’ accident on a Vespa scooter (slick road conditions being the cause) by a certain band member that resulted in several broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder. Because of the physical nature of the musical instrument involved, 9 DAYS of jamming were lost, although I’m happy to report that the person involved is recovering nicely, so much so, in fact, that writing sessions resumed last Monday (January 21), despite it being a holiday for many.

Coincidently (?), a few days prior to the mishap on the scooter, another person involved with Tool also wound up in the hospital after crashing his Vespa in Hollywood. Although he suffered a head injury (as well as multiple cuts and bruises to his body) .

Several days ago members of the press (from different magazines) conducted interviews with band members about upcoming events, and I would imagine that these writers, etc. also inquired as to how things were progressing with regards to the band’s next record. So, there’s something to look forward to reading, and I will certainly try to give updates as to when these publications hit the newsstands."

Wasn't there a post on here where Peter Stapfer plays Adam's rig and comments? I remember something about a massive phase shift from all the cabinets that made him dizzy playing directly in front of them. The tubes in the blueface were Chinese 6l6GCMSTR (Ruby). Peter thought the Diezel was way to dark but Adam loves it. Not much on the Marshall.

I saw Tool this last summer in St Paul Mn..Riverfest show that my teenager said was their only show in the US? Anyway he played through his Superbass and VH4..the best live tone I've ever heard PERIOD. Awesome. Not a Tool head-I have 10,000 days and Undertow..but they were great.

Here you guys go, pics courtesy of John Z.

Here is a screen shot of Adam's Super bass/ Super Lead.
Has anyone tried this on there's to see if it gets that Undertow tone?
I thought the volume on these had to be maxed to get that power tube push aka crunch ala Jones.

Remember this was a recent pic and not from the UnderTow era. ;)

John Z is a very cool guy. Pretty amazing player .....

So if he is blending the Marshall with the Diezel, what are his Diezel settings? The Marshall is set up for mids, is the Diezel set up with the mids scooped?

Diezel has mids maxed out. There's a photo floating around of his VH4 settings, too.

Those settings would be ungodly loud , but still wouldnt be as dirty as you hear in his tone. Something else is going on in there

Nothing else is going on. It's not magic. I've said this many times before but nobody seems to listen: I built a Super Lead clone to the specs Dave Friedman said Adam's amp is. And to my ears, it sounds identical to what you hear on Undertow. No boosts. No "mods." No magical ingredients. Just a stock JMP, a Les Paul, and some Greenbacks.

Yeah, his mic setup has some inherent phasing that is part of his (live) sound.

I wasn't even trying, and just one day my JCM 800 cranked up sounded spot on like Adam's Undertow tone.

Mind you I do have a similar process of running a high gain amp alongside the Marshall.

The bass player is the biggest tone secret in that band IMO most crushing how it intertwines with the guitar tone. Then drums the whole band works so well with each other.

That is very true. The bass and guitar tones interlock really well- the bass has a lot of dirt on it so when it combines with Adam's tone it makes for a mega-crunch sound.

Unless Dave Friedman's part of the conspiracy, he's posted that it's just a late 70s Superbass converted essentially to Superlead spec.

Edit: there's talk in here about that amp
viewtopic.php?f=57&t=80694

I've seen that thread, it's not a late 70's its a 74 or 75.
After 75 Marshall used plastic switches for the stand by and power.

I don't think his amp has a mod to push out more gain than a stock SL.
I think Friedman is correct on the specs.

His tolex/case for the Super bass is not the original, you can see how it cuts off the JMP in the corner and the tops of Mids, bass, ect.
He at one time ran 2, the other was a late 70's Super bass.

Anyway, the MXR micro amp does boost a bit and the JB helps too.

Once I have one I will share :D

Marshall JMP that were destined for the canadian market had metal toggle switches not the plastic rocker type

I found this. Don't know if it helps, but it's interesting.

I saw this a while back as well.

I know we're talking Adam's amps and settings but what got my attention was the
VH4 into a 2x15" bass cab?? Has anyone tried this?
I heard years ago that he was using a 1x15" bass cab but didn't really believe it.

Well that tears it. Will an owner of a VH4 please swipe their bass players 2x15 cab
and post it on youtube so we can hear it for ourselves...
