Like many of you, Alcatrazz was the first time I saw/heard Yngwie and I was blown away - a fan for life created right there in the spot. It was the "Island In The Sun" video on MTV (what a concept, they once actually showed videos.) My first impression was, "Oh that's the singer from Rainbow" and then "Holy crap Batman, who is that guitar player!"
Note that during this era, Yngwie was actually employing "rests" in his soloing. His phrasing and melodic sense was so much better and accessible then. These days, it's all about lightning fast ascending/descending Harmonic Minor scales and super human linking of Major, Minor, Suspended and Diminished arpeggios - it's become way too repetitive. Sadly he has become what critics unfairly accused him of in the early days. On top of that, his last few albums sound like they were recorded on an 80s era Tascam 4-track. Actually I take that back - 4 track demos sound better
A few years ago, they released on CD the complete Japan concert that
Live Sentence was taken from. They clearly did some editing/fixing on the finished product because in the complete/unedited concert, Yngwie is WAY out of tune on "Hiroshima Mon Amour."
