all this Altec talk got me offa my duff to dust off my best RR trick

my mahalo 4x12 cab has 2 WGS invaders, one of their ET65s, which both have a raspiness though not nearly as metallic as the 417,
and a gh30

i forgot to turn off my jackson new wave chorus pedal before taking a stab at the solo but it kinda made it a happy accident in a Randy doubletrack phasy metallic kinda way..

oh and that was the randall SL+ module in my syn 2/mesa 2:90 rig.

Great playng and that Chorus works! Kinda makes up for the 2 or 3 tracks as you said. I always use a chorus when doing live Randy stuff and nobody has complained so far..... I think. LOL

you are definitely getting the toothier metal RR attack through the Altecs!
my buddy zachman had the RR jackson and that thing was loaded with sone zesty pickup cranking through his early stereo boogie rig!
a mark IIB combo with an altec and speaker out to a 1960 marshall cabs ,
and a mark III coli/1960 half stack. the tone was pretty angry ala Randy + Sykes!!

Yes. I remember him talking about that setup! I have 1990 RR1 that I bought new and then 2 years later I bought one of the Tribute Concorde guitars. They only made 200 of them and a 1 to 4 ratio of vintage trem vs. Floyd. I went up to Sam Ash in Manhattan as they had #1 with cash in hand and found out some kid had come in and put money down when they first announced they were building them, so no sale. I was SUPER pissed as I was told from the manager at my Sam Ash it was a done deal..etc. Few days later I go to the Manager at my Sam Ash here in NJ and we call Jackson. I wanted one in chrome hardware with a vintage trem. They werent sure if they could do it..blah blah and they would get back in touch. They called a week later and gave it go. Had to wait months for it at the time but I still have it, with a factory cert stating it came with chrome.. etc. That one rarely gets played and its admittedly a case queen. I have been playing it a bit more since I got yelled at for not playing it from one of the members here {LOL.. and rightfully so!]

I actually brought a 4x12 Altec cab home as all I have here are 2x12s cause yer clip gave me some inspiration. If I can find some time I might do some RR jam clips. Btw, did Zach come back to his senses and pull the rack back out or is he still using pedals these days? Man... so many discussions on HRI and his famous pic he would pull out of that fridge! LOL Good times for sure!

time to deflower the case queen?
shred the RR gnar! you have great pick articulation ala Randy and it sounds like you took the time to nail his tones and solos off the live album. if you’re taking requests i’ve always loved the solos in flying high again and crowley?
zach has been slowly piecing out his rig. the tristereo, tc1210 and 2290 are gone?

Thanks for compliments! I grew up shredding Randy stuff with my nemesis {at the time} being Mike Romeo, who is the guitarist for Symphony X. He was the only guy "around these parts" that played Randy well, and being kids I couldnt have him stealing my thunder. Fast forward to today and Mike is just a monster player it makes me sick. LOL. He is a very humble guy and I'm pretty thankful I knew him back then to kick my butt into doing Randy like Randy. Little did I know what kind of player he would become!

I do try and get Randys live stuff down as the studio side is tough with the triple tracking, bends that are slightly off creating a cool chorus thing, punches that are a few ms off here and there... Thats stuff ya just cant do live so its like taking the best bits from it all and try and put it together to get as close as possible to copping his note choices, nuances and feel.
I actually prefer the tone on Bats Head Soup, which was a bootleg that I try and go for rather than the tribute album. I'm sure its all in the mic placement because his tone was pretty consistent, but with those Altecs especially, mic placement and board EQ are crucial into turning it into a hollow, top end mess. I know alot of guys dig the Tribute tone, but I kinda feel it misses some of the body in the low mids, hence just a tad hollow.

I remember a while ago Zach asking what he thought the Tri was worth and was shocked when guys started throwing out numbers. Its crazy what we picked up for not that much ages ago can warrant huge money today!! I regret selling my 1210 cause it really had its own thing going on but with the Terc and the Eventide stuff it gets the job done.
