good: Engl Savage 60, Mesa Mark V:25
The Engl -once you understand that Rhythm gain influences Lead gain- is so damn versatile. I can go from Joe Walsh to Dark Angel pretty darn quick.
If the gain boost and fx-loop were footswitchable, I'd be gigging (again) with it.
It was my 1st tube amp (after many years of small gigs with a Peavey Bandit 112), but I sold it to spring for an Engl Invader. Bigger=better right?
Fast forward 10 years and while I'm still enjoying the Invader and its additional features, I kept lingering GAS for the Savage 60, because it could do that raw 'n tight pissed off modded Marshall-tone better than the Invader, so I bought one again and enjoying it ever since.
The Mesa; just a great sounding, all-round, versatile small package, ideal for studio/home use (well, it still gets shit loud easily with that finnicky volume knob).
bad:
Carvin V3M.
I wanted to like that thing; it replaced a H&K Tubemeister 18 with the idea of gigging with it and carrying less weight...
great cleans and it could do a mean JMP break up tone too...but even after extensive tube-rolling, I could not get a decent, tight metal sound out of the drive channels.
Also, hated the digital reverb on it. Way too 'ambient' with a ridiculous long tail.
Mesa Mini Rectifier.
Mind you, didn't own it, but after getting rid of the V3M, I was testing this extensively and what a flubby, fizzy mess it was.
Switched to a little Engl Ironball and BOOM, there's the proper tight metal riffing and lead tone with no fizz or flub. Bought the Ironball on the spot.
