I've had a few. But the one that surprised me the most was a JVM 205h. I have gone through a bunch of amps and love many (several Diezel, several Bogners, and others) and one day I picked up a used JVM205 pretty cheap. It blew me away. I can't say every channel and setting is good, but I dialed in pure gain bliss with my pedalboard. Total surprise, I play it more than my others. Although admittedly I play my AxeIII more than anything these last few months.

I have never understood the JVM hate. I absolutely LOVE them. I’ve owned a bunch and they have all sounded KILLER

I have to say a Spalwn quick rod and also a nitro. They just didnt do anything for me. I have heard great demos of these amps but I just found them sterile and loud.

good: Engl Savage 60, Mesa Mark V:25

The Engl -once you understand that Rhythm gain influences Lead gain- is so damn versatile. I can go from Joe Walsh to Dark Angel pretty darn quick.
If the gain boost and fx-loop were footswitchable, I'd be gigging (again) with it.
It was my 1st tube amp (after many years of small gigs with a Peavey Bandit 112), but I sold it to spring for an Engl Invader. Bigger=better right?
Fast forward 10 years and while I'm still enjoying the Invader and its additional features, I kept lingering GAS for the Savage 60, because it could do that raw 'n tight pissed off modded Marshall-tone better than the Invader, so I bought one again and enjoying it ever since.

The Mesa; just a great sounding, all-round, versatile small package, ideal for studio/home use (well, it still gets shit loud easily with that finnicky volume knob).

bad:
Carvin V3M.
I wanted to like that thing; it replaced a H&K Tubemeister 18 with the idea of gigging with it and carrying less weight...
great cleans and it could do a mean JMP break up tone too...but even after extensive tube-rolling, I could not get a decent, tight metal sound out of the drive channels.
Also, hated the digital reverb on it. Way too 'ambient' with a ridiculous long tail.

Mesa Mini Rectifier.
Mind you, didn't own it, but after getting rid of the V3M, I was testing this extensively and what a flubby, fizzy mess it was.
Switched to a little Engl Ironball and BOOM, there's the proper tight metal riffing and lead tone with no fizz or flub. Bought the Ironball on the spot.

One thing I can say is that the Fractal Axe III surprised me more than anything I have owned in the past. I've had a Kemper which I would place last on the list as far as what I like to hear and a Helix which I liked a lot better than the Kemper. We all hear different things. I've had the III now for almost 2 years and for something like that to stick, it has to sound good to me and it absolutely does.

I just got a Mark V 25 head and man, I love this little guy as a backup to my JP-2C and just having fun playing it anywhere.

Lucky to have such great gear and very thankful.

Good:

I’m gonna stretch a little and say the Mesa Simul Satellite. I wasn’t expecting much when I first picked one up, but damned if that thing didn’t turn into my favorite power amp of all time. No matter what I ran through it, it sounded FANTASTIC. After thinking about it, it really makes sense...as it is a Mesa Mark power section, graphic EQ and all, but I didn’t really think it through prior to buying. The only drawback is that is is 4 rack spaces and heavy as hell...but damn does it sound good

Bad:

Diezel VH4. Had a few versions and hated playing them all. There was just this “thing” I couldn’t dial out that I didn’t like. Love listening to others play through them, but I just couldn’t get along with it....and I REALLY wanted to! Hence buying several   I did like the Herbert I had a bit better, but it didn’t do it for me either.

Not a surprise, but still the best Marshallish amp I’ve ever owned: Henning Cherry Bomb. Steve really got it right with this amp, IMHO
