put an A8 magnet in the jb
Or just get an alternative 8...wait, you want less output than a JB, right?

Custom 5. It's basically a '59 on steroids. It's in my 2015 PS10 Iceman. Raunchy, tight, and articulate.

My other suggestion is a Pearly Gates if you want brighter.

custom 5 is exactly what you said you wanted.

The Custom 5!!

I'm not too sure about the Custom 5. I would like a little less mids than what the JB offers but just a little.
The Custom 5 sounds very scooped in comparison.
The demos of the Custom 5 I've heard don't do anything for me.

Order from the SD custom shop. Specify MJ to wind. She'll call you and you can just tell her what you you're looking to achieve.

I've done this twice chasing the perfect JB. I have one overwound 4% and one underwound 4%. Both are great in different guitars.

^What Jer said.

I was going to chime in with how I like the RTM in my San Dimas (I have a DeMartini Snake). It's supposed to be like a JB with an A2, but I hear it quite different than the JB I have in a guitar with a similar build. It does have less perceived output than a JB, and the mids are relaxed a bit. Seems to have slight compression on it, which I think is a good thing.

I don't really have any issues with the tone but I'm not exactly in love with it. A little less output and mids and a tighter low-end wouldn't hurt.

I'm looking to get another Duncan pup to replace the JB.

This might sound redundant but try a 35th anniversary JB or an antiquity, they have less gain and tighter low end. As for the mids they are a bit more focused than in the production JB. I have the 35th and the regular and the 35th sounds way more refined than the regular.

I have JB's in 4 of my guitars, I tried a Custom Custom and compared to the JB it was mid scooped and had more bass. I didn't like it. The regular Custom is not bad.

I have the JB antiquity with an aged nickel cover and it's ok , measures 15.4 on meter installed .
Great pickup but at times i just get tired of the in your face loud mid hump tone .

I can't see how someone would say a Custom Custom is scooped , it has an A2 mag which are known for strong smooth mids ,soft bass and mellow top end .
Mid scooped in that range would be the Custom 5 , it's basically a 59B with the A5 mag and 43 wire but with the same winding as the CC and Custom models .

Trust me on this: Custom/59 Hybrid

It's the best of all worlds...

I think a lot of people including myself look at the C5 eq on paper and think it's midscooped but when I tried it it was anything but midscooped, really ballsy and balanced. The only reason I got rid of it is was I felt it was a little too hot , felt just as hot as the JB , Super Distortion or Duncan Distortion

Actually a good choice , it's nothing like a JB to my ears but a good choice nonetheless

Don't go custom custom..dumbass name...and it's more of what you don't like about the jb.

Thanks for the heads up

Is your guitar bright ? dark ?

The San Dimas is on the bright side.

Are you looking to warm it up a bit or keep it on the bright side

Is there a tone pot in that Charvel? If not it probably is using a 250k or 300k volume pot which will cut some of the highs on the JB already. An JB2 will be even softer. I have one in a strat type guitar with tone and vol and I find it a little tame now. My vote would be for the aldrich. Love it. Tight, crunchy, woody, and the highs are smoother and not ice pick. Done and done!SH-5 has bright highs, did not dig. Custom SH-11 is flub city but the highs are nice.

I replaced the JB in my fat strat with an Anderson H2+. I also replaced the JB in my fender Contemporary HH tele with an H2+. The H2+ is clearer than the JB, but not as sweet.

You can lead a horse to water ....

Actually the SH-5 likes Mahogany and warmer woods.

Basswood & Alder it depends on the guitar.
