So. I’m in Denmark and no where in hell around here can a HR be tried. Not sure if any are in Europe at all!

I think it’s time that one are.

I need help! 🤪🤪

All the different power tubes are confusing me!

@braintheory likes the KT88’s. @Techdeth likes the EL34. @WizardSouth-JP many of the
🤪 @Bram576 not sure what you got

I like the clips I’ve heard. But it’s hard to tell thru the clips what the different power tubes does to the amp. Are the differences very small?

I don’t play very modern metal. But I like the attack it has. Can it still do the garage inc sound?

Hey dude, I have a 120 watt kt66. Power tube differences are small. Wattage is a bigger difference to me personally. There are subtle differences like other tubes sounding a bit more hifi than others.

Honestly if you don’t play modern metal, and want the wizard sound and are going for the garage inc sound, I’d save the cash and get a MC. The hell razor is good at doing all those sounds but takes it a step further, more aggressive, more gain etc. You can also boost the MC if you want to get closeish to the hell razor, don’t get me wrong it won’t sound the same or as aggressive but you can get closeish.

I tracked this a while back comparing the hell razor and mc, first is mc second is hell razor

Also, this is the only legit tube shootout I’ve really seen. Kohles great at what he does, shoots out tubes with a rectifier

18:50 is the straight recorded stuff

I want to try a wizard so bad, I've heard nothing but amazing things about them especially from people who's ears i trust and into the same type of tones.

But man I have to say, these must be like Larry amps, I've heard tons of clips and none of them sound $5,000 amazing to me in the slightest bit. I've only heard one clip of a Hellrazor that made me say yes.

Meaning clips aren't selling these amps for me but I bet they're still amazing from the talk I hear about them.

Aren’t hell razors closer to $7k though?

El34s . Ricks main tube . Without the EL34s you’re not getting garage inc . Ricks amps with out EL34s loses a special magic sauce . It’s actually drastic imo

Thats one of the best I've heard honestly. The top end seems a little extreme but that's probably just my ears and I'd dial it back a little but wow. Nice clip dude.

Thanks! I dialed the treble like that on purpose. The Presence was set to just over 8 which really shoots it into that sizzly territory. You can easily dial that back to take the edge off if you want but I liked the way it sounded at the time.

They're not cheap but after playing one and just about every other modern high gainer out there, I honestly can't imagine a modern high gain amp sounding or feeling better, at least to my ears.

Yeah man, that's what I keep hearing and why I want one. I'm all about the feels, plus the tone sounds mean....especially in your video.

If you want Garage Inc get a MC1
The HR just has more gain shaping tools than his other amps - tonally it's similar to the MTL, but gets aggressive and tighter w/o a boost.

Yep. It has totally evaporated any GAS I had left for modern high gain gear. There are other amps I have and love that do modern high gain tones, but at this point I like them for their specific character and personality, while I think of the HR as a more of an idealized tone in general. When I play a boosted Recto, I hear and feel the "Recto-ness" and think "man this boosted Recto kicks ass." When I play a Mesa Mark, I think "This Mark sounds and feels like a great Mark and kicks ass." When I play an XTC I think "This XTC sounds and feels incredible, listen to all that XTC grease, etc" but when I play the HR I just think "this is the perfect high gain tone" and I stop thinking about the gear and just play.

I don't mean to get all cork-sniffy with "haunting mids" talk or whatever, I'm just trying to say I'm totally happy with it and to my ears it leaves nothing to be desired.

Here's that same clip with some very slight high cut EQ added at around 11kHz just to barely shave off some of the more abrasive frequencies if it helps:

Agreed. I preferred my boosted KT66 MTL mk2 60w over my 120w KT66 HR

The KT150 version is. The other versions are less, but still over $6k unless you get one of the lower wattage versions maybe, which I hear still sound very powerful

It only started off as the main tube so to speak. If you look at all his amps over the last 5-7 years or so you’ll see about just as many out there with 6L6’s, KT88’s or KT66’s and heard he has the tranny’s designed around each tube type to optimize. I never tried a 6L6 or KT66 version, but from clips seems like I may even prefer them. In either case I’d think they should all be great. If we took a large sample size of opinions trying all these versions I don’t think we’d have a clear winner with any tube type unless enough guys prefer the extra power/thump of the 150w versions. All I can say is I find the KT150 HR to be light years better in almost every way to the 2016 MTL EL34 100w and 1996 MC EL34 100w I had before. I’d probably just discontinue those models if I were Rick

Would be such a hard decision to make on the tube types for these amps.

I just think there’s a bigger tube the better kinda like bigger s always better . But I just 6l6s and kt88s to messing something badly from ricks amps compared to EL34s . There a glow to swell if each note you hit that’s missing without EL34s . It was DRASTIC imo
Of course any of his amps are great . But I highly stand behind this .
