Another Hell Razor thread

Thanks! I dialed the treble like that on purpose. The Presence was set to just over 8 which really shoots it into that sizzly territory. You can easily dial that back to take the edge off if you want but I liked the way it sounded at the time.

They're not cheap but after playing one and just about every other modern high gainer out there, I honestly can't imagine a modern high gain amp sounding or feeling better, at least to my ears.
Yeah definitely the best current made high gain amp I’ve played. Any other amp I’ve enjoyed as much or more is sadly very rare, generally no longer made stuff. It’s a very complete amp at what it does

I just think there’s a bigger tube the better kinda like bigger s always better . But I just 6l6s and kt88s to messing something badly from ricks amps compared to EL34s . There a glow to swell if each note you hit that’s missing without EL34s . It was DRASTIC imo
Of course any of his amps are great . But I highly stand behind this .
Not about bigger being better. At least with the EL34 MTL and MC I had I did not hear any extra glow, overtones, complexity or anything of that nature vs the KT150 HR. Of course EL34’s have their advantages (better mids and uppermids) that maybe are just that important for you, but I’d think if you heard an extra “glow” or anything more complex about the tone I’d attribute it more likely to something about the particular amp just being a good one (it happens) or the quality of tubes it came with

I truly believe there’s a big difference .a huge dffernce . But it’s ok to disagreee

I fully believe in your experience the EL34’s worked better in the amps you had for what you wanted, but I don’t think this is sufficient to generalize that EL34’s work better in every model they make of also every year and revision that also varies their sound. Even in different revision Recto’s that many feel all sound the same to them I’ve had some different powertube preferences in them. Now it’s very possible I may also prefer the EL34 HR or you may prefer the KT150 HR, but we cannot make these generalized powertube assumptions without trying it ourselves in the given amp model. I’ve done plenty of power tube swaps in amps that can do it with preferences that I didn’t expect to have vs what I usually like

There’s a razor sharp aggressiveness to his EL34 amps that his others didn’t have is all I’m saying

I know one of you gear whores has 6 of these with every tube type laying around.
Yeah the tough part is getting someone who will mic them and all that too.

Why I like that Kohle test, shows some actual differences. They are subtle but can truly hear what a tube is doing.

I’d like to see a shootout of the exact same model with different tubes. Same settings.
Me too . I did at home and I felt there was a HUGE difference in the room . Agressive razor sharp highs on the el34 wok for me . But some may not be looking for that sound

If Rick actually has different tranny’s used for each powertube model he makes that could make the results maybe a bit less subtle, but I’m guessing still subtle in the bigger picture

Yeah that’s my thought. That’s why I was saying would really like to see Amps with same wattage, same knob settings, different tubes. If needed we could level match them too. It’s a known thing that to the human ear louder just sounds better, but it’s not necessarily true. When you level match things get a lot more interesting

I am just wondering. If you order HR from EU, how much do you expect?? Of course, it depends on the EU/USD exchange rate. But, I guess it's almost 9,000 USD considering custom tax. Am I right?
