Another hurricane.. Ugghh... Headed straight for us.

It is a disaster. 75+% of gas stations had no gas. Our electric aims to be on 10/17, (which means no water either). It's a total nightmare, and downer living like this. Worst I've seen since I've lived here, and I've been here over 30 years. Gas should be flowing soon, but those that do have it, have cars backed up a mile waiting to get it. It's utterly insane.

Hotels are booked, I've tried that route too. Could lose my job over it - they've been group texting during, and after, and their only concern is people getting back to work. Fuck the fact that you have no electric, no water, and a major gas crisis. I might tell them to pound sand. I don't care at this point.

It's crazy that workplaces can't see that there's a fucking emergency and will fire or discipline you even when the world is on fire....

I'm reminded of the NC(?) company that refused to allow their employees to leave as the storm approached and after it was too late "ok, you can leave now". At least 2 people died in the event and my guess is no one will be held accountable...the invincibility of the corporate world.

They worry about the almighty dollar. Sad part is, I work for one of the largest companies in the industry, owned by a larger corporation and do 100's of billions with over 500 locations worldwide. Like a handful of locations in Florida, (and probably Carolinas from Helene), closed, are going to bankrupt them.

Totally tone deaf about the whole situation. No empathy, whatsoever. They had me on a 17 person group text and their only concern was who had power and wifi so they could work from home. Fuck, I have no electric, wifi, or water for that matter. And they expect me in the office tomorrow.

How much abuse from them will it take for you to organize an employee push back?

I work with cowards.
If you join them you will die inside a little bit. I would've already blown up the group text. Go ahead, fire me. Unemployment plus a civil case for wrongful termination. This would've been in my group text message: NO WATER NO POWER NO FOOD NO GAS THIS IS THE 3RD WORLD HERE CAN"T MAKE IT TO WORK TOMORROW HOW ABOUT SOME CONSIDERATION FOR PEOPLE SUFFERING?!?! Then maintain radio silence and prepare to be fired while hoping for the best.

This is Florida. There's no such thing as wrongful termination. Employees in Florida have no rights. Trust me, I did almost blow up. Several times.

Fair enough but if you aren't willing to stand up then you get what you get. Did they make you take the vaccine too? If so, did you do as you were told? If so, why would you expect different in this situation? If you aren't ready to lose everything standing on your principles then you will be easy to manipulate and control. The main difference between a loner and a leader is 2 or 3 extra like minded people who you surely won't find if you lay down like everyone else.

I don't let people push me around, never have. Jobs are hard to come by these days, especially ones that pay enough to have a decent living. I've been looking to leave this company for nearly a year, but I need to have a plan B in place.. It's coming. I found somewhere to stay where I can shower and get to work, but I won't be Mr. Nice Guy while I'm there. The bullshit group texts will be addressed and my feelings well-known. I'm not a happy camper.

@napalmdeath - I would just reply that you have no gas, in addition to electric and water. :dunno:

Times like this that make you force a life decision are sometimes the best opportunities to break.

Do you have a mortgage? Car payment? High car insurance? Dealing with inflation like the rest of us? There's a fine line between standing up for yourself, and doing something stupid. Right now, continuing to get a paycheck is priority. Unemployment isn't an option.

It takes a brave soul.......with nothing to lose. Not many are "qualified".

I may get fired after all.. After over 100 texts through the group texting in a period of 4 days, I filed a complaint with HR. I told them that it was completely tone deaf how it was handled, and the lack of empathy on display by my Manager and the overwhelming amount of texts sent with the sole motivation of seeing who had wifi and electric so they could work from home. They were very appreciative about the info, and were somewhat shocked how our branch handled it, (we have 500 locations worldwide). Thought I was heard, and accepted.. Word got to the Manager about me bitching to others about group texts and how I loathe them, (though understandably, there's implied consent to receive them from your employer in certain situations like a hurricane). Monday, I get a snotty teams message from my Manager, (I forgot to mention she's a total bitch anyway, and probably 300lbs.), that I wasn't logged into the phone system at 8:02 AM. I was finishing up an important email.. Nothing malicious. Then, I get another snotty teams message that I missed a phone call, and was away from my desk. I was taking a piss!

Yesterday, she tells everybody that Corporate people are coming, and we all need to dress appropriately next week, (I dress appropriately every day, she dresses, and most others, like slobs). A few were off, so what does she do? GROUP TEXTS everybody, including us who were already verbally told, and those that were off.. Coincidence?

My phone went off like a Pac Man game, and I lost it. I texted all and said, and I quote, "Please remove me from any further group texts! I despise them, and find them obnoxiously annoying!" Well, she didn't like that, and I told the others in the office I apologize, and just had enough.

I suppose they could fire me for being a dick. And yes, everybody in the text saw it and she's probably steaming that she got put on blast in front of everyone, but fuck her. And fuck them.

You may or may not get fired, who knows with some of these corporate bully types. One thing to always keep handy an know how to use is the HR buzzwords like harassment and retaliation.

Before I go further and forget to mention it... DOCUMENT EVERYTHING. Keep a note pad and write everything that happens down. In the eyes of HR if it's not documented it didn't happen. This can work to your advantage if your manager doesn't document anything. You have the only proof of events and your manager would be SOL. Also, no matter what happens or how pissed you're getting, keep your cool. Always speak with an even tone. Let your manager be the one to start getting all uppity. If she is a bitch it probably won't take much for her to get all riled up. And what I've noticed of these types is when you do keep calm it usually pisses them off more and the get that much more irate.

You understand the need for text outside of work hours for extenuating circumstances, but found the abundance (over 100 texts) to be harassment towards you and possibly other employees. Since she berated you for not logging on at 8:02 (I assume you were to log in at 8:00) and being away from your desk because you were using the restroom you felt she was retaliating against you for reporting the situation to HR. Present this with your documentation to HR and file another complaint of harassment/retaliation.

This would make HR reluctant to allow dismissal (firing) of you because you've started laying the groundwork for wrongful termination. Where I live is a hire/fire at will state also, but there are still precedents set for wrongful dismissal. Outside of protected classes, discrimination/harassment/retaliation are the other big three that usually go together. If they do let you go do not sign anything they put in front of you. They may try to bully you and say you must sign, but you do not have to. After that set up a meeting with a lawyer to to see if you have a case. In the event it does go that way and you can prove harassment and retaliation the company (especially since it's national) will be in deep shit.

I truly loathe the fact that things typically need to go in this direction with these corporate types. It would be so much easier to be able to work things out like adults. If needed bitch at each other, air grievances, get over it and move on no hard feelings. But unfortunately you end up having to play their game and use it against them to protect yourself.
