Lee at GMW?
Big plus one there. Lee is the man.

This is where I heard the no crackle rumor from. Actually, it was Jackson guitars, they said they wont do it because environmental laws in California. I think it was Pat Wilkins who did those finishes for Jackson and GMW. Double check but I am pretty sure it's banned in California.
I thought I had heard the same thing on California, but somehow it seems they are working it again with Jackson having the recent green crackle Soloist run, plus there was also a recent red crackle pointy Charvel run.

Is that about the crackle finish or the Ibanez/ESP swirl finishes ? The guy that did those died and something went down where his wife didn't release the bodies that were done to the rightful owners ? That's all over the 'net. And I guess no one else knows how to do them...pretty sure crackle is still available.

I was thinking crackle, along the lines of what EXPcustom was saying that it was environmental related (but EXPcustom might have more context). On the swirls topic, are you referring to Herc Fede? I didn't think he was the only one who knew the technique, but was more considered like the top guy or thereabouts for swirling.

A guy in the Jackson/Charvel group on FB just did it and it turned out great. You can buy the crackle paint at a hardwares store.

Sent a request to join that group. Also emailed Dan for a quote.

Yes on Herc.

I forget the details, but Lee uses someone else and they no longer share any space (I think DRL rented Lee's spray facility for solid / background). It seemed that it wasn't totally amicable but maybe that's just scuttlebutt..

For swirls Ron Thorn is about the best currently doing them... he did the Ibanez P&W anniversary guitars and a bunch for Schecter recently.

Back to crackles

I think I have a crackle solution. I will be doing a guitar refin thread soon.

JerEvil, any chance you might do a build thread on that? I'd love to see the finished result, but also, I think it'd be really interesting to at least see it progress through the process, unless of course doing so would reveal too much about the process that you might not want to reveal. Either way, though, I'd definitely love to see this one when you get it finished.

I would love to see a technique breakdown on crackle finishing. I sprayed guitars, drums, but mainly cars during the eighties. I remember at that time the crackles were done with a color coat followed by an intermiterary clear then a special crackle layer and finally Black or whatever the final color layer.
I can't remember what was used at the time as the crackle layer. It didn't crack the final Black until 15-20min after the black skim dried.....obviously after all the activity everything was buried in high build Poly clears.
