For whatever reason this amp passed though my field of vision and got me a little interested. It seems like it could be a sleeper that's still cheap and people haven't caught wind of yet. I'm not completely unfamiliar with it, but at the same time don't know a whole lot about it. I vaguely remember them coming out and seeing them at GC. I did try to do some research though there's not much out there. What I found so far is... It comes from the era when SLM owned Ampeg & Crate before that all went to crap. The clean channel seems to be close to the same circuit as the vintage ones and the dirty channel has been described like a darker JCM800. It may or may not have been at least in part designed by Obeid Khan.

Any more info is old and pretty sparse. "Demos" are shitty cell phone clips and pretty old as well. So I guess my questions are What does this amp actually sound like? Is it like a darker sounding JCM800 a good description? If so, it it somewhat lively or just kind of bland? How is the reliability and build quality? I believe they were made in the USA so it should be decent, but want to confirm.

For reference this is the amp I'm talking about.

I had one for a bit. Ran it beside a jcm900 model 4500. I enjoyed the clean channel a lot, way better than the Marshall as I recall. I didn't enjoy the dirt side. I don't recall anything jcm800 like from it, would have loved to keep it for clean but moved it because it didn't have the dirt I wanted... Been almost 20 years since I had it, and it wasn't my primary head so I didn't crank it much, perhaps missed out on the good dirt?

I love the cleans on these

The dirt is definitely an acquired taste

Perhaps you can shape it more with pedals?

Ime it was pretty weedy and uncontrollable though

These were more of a Country amp, right? Good clean channel with reverb, and a light crunch for leads. More for chicken pickin' than for metal.

Shits rips evh!!

Well those are VH riffs, but I don't know if I'd call that the brown sound. It's hard to tell what it actually sounds like in that video since I can hear the strumming of the strings almost as loud as the amp.

I've read this same thing in old forum posts. Everyone seems to have said the clean channel is one of the best. It's been a mixed bag about the dirty channel. Some said it's great, others said its not their thing. I guess it's at least different from the norm :dunno:

Maybe if a came across one for a few hundred bucks I might pick it up to try.

Worth trying for sure

I personally thought the cleans were really good
