Anyone know what Matt Talbot of Hum is rigging to get these God-tier monolithic wall of sound toanz?

In the past it's Oranges, Hiwatts and and a Dual Recto in studio. I don't know about the new album though. Huge massive tones though.

My memory is terrible but i saw he once used a Marshall JMP-1 & Power amp when I saw them live YEARS AGO

Are these the same guys that released the song Stars back in the 90's? This is the first stuff I have heard from then since then. These tunes sound like they could have been on Accelerated Evolution by Devin T.

HUM…now there’s a blast from the past. Back in the mid 90’s, my buddy had one of those massive stereo systems in his truck. We’d ride around or park in a field somewhere, get absolutely baked, and crank Stars. A coulple of other tracks, too. That one “ballad” in 12/8 was awesome. The guitar tone was just massive. I know that was shoe gazer rock, but that tone wasn’t very far at all from 80’s metal tone, imho. It was processed without sounding processed. At least that’s how my ears heard it. I have no idea the gear that was used on the album, but I suspect lots of layering, both in tracks and in amps.

It’s funny listening back to these tracks. Those Shoegazer guys and the like would turn their noses down on 80’s rock, but this is some pretty processed metal guitar tone, imho. That’s what I liked about this album. And the riffs. Singer sucks, but I think he’s trying to sound like he does, too. That’s part of their sound.

I always liked this track as well:

I knew it! I KNEW IT! NO EQ! NO COMPRESSION! Amps, cabs, pan, tripletracked w/ solid bed tone from great mics/pre’s and tape.

Thanks for that article. Now I have confirmation I’m not mad. Wall of tone is just that and nothing else.

Another thing, on Inlet...when I listened to the album on some really good monitors, there is a lot of synth stuff going on. A lot of thick buried pads and stuff. I would not at all be shocked to know they are using amps, modelers, God knows what else now. I also listened to a podcast which I will link with their drummer Brian, who talked about how Tim Lash mixed the album in his own living room. Like I said, I plan on seeing if Matt would be willing to maybe shoot the shit over a beer at his bar soon and see what he's willing to divulge.

I’ve been listening to CD quality via Tidal on an SPL Crimson 3 and Focal Alpha 80’s with dual 8 inch sub. I hear the pads swelling.

Though the Alphas play to 35hz, the sub crossed at 40hz@24db/oct. provides the guts of the bottom. Those guitars and bass paint a gigantic sonic landscape.
