the decimator pedal or rack comes in two platforms...one runs as a normal gate/hush in front of the amp. in the other model, there is also a send/return for running it also in the FX loop to quiet down your noisy pedals or use some signal gating. this way you have both sides of the amp covered they also have a stereo model for mono/stereo output for stereo amps/power amps.

i don't own one, but they seem to be popular. i use an mxr as in the earlier post on the floor, but also have a dBx in the rack.

the pedal is one Decimator circuit in the loop of the amp, the effects send/return is the loop that allows you to track the input signal with the guitar rather than the preamps fx loop send. It is NOT another suppression circuit gating the guitar.

i think i am going to draw up some simple block diagrams and flood the internet with the information. I guess ISP doesn't do a job of explaining that clearly enough.

flood away.......

May I ask why you are having a problem, I run many diff guitars thru herbert and vh4, esp the emgs in my les paul, i use no noise gate. have no problems!

I use a smart gate pedal & love it. If you need to crank the gate to a point where it affects your tone then something needs looking @ in your chain. Especially with a herbert.

You may ask, but if I knew the answer I would not have asked here :D

With my neck-pu (Holydiver) there is no problem like this, but neck has much lower output.
The problem appears when I crank the amp (I dont know if you can call it "crank" when channel vol is at 12 and master at 9 o'clock), when it is on bedroom level, there are no unwanted feedbacks.

I have always been a fan of NOT to use noisegates, but when you have feedback with MUTED strings, you can not play normally.

i just fixed a head yesterday for a guy, with aweful feedback it was preamp tubes, changed them and feedback gone! give it a whirl....

Hey crabby,

I still have some preamp tubes lying around. I will give it a try.

But I have absolutely no other sound problems
Last time a preamp tube was gone bad I had strange noises etc...
Which preamp tube was damaged?

He had the new line 6 head w tubes. It only had 2 12ax7s I swapped out both n problem gone. I also had the same problem w Herbert but it was time so I did all the tubes n feedback was gone. I'd try each one hard to tell. But if its in gain maybe the gain stage tube.

I play my Herbert & VH4 @ volumes desgined for deaf people & the only noise i really ever got out of it was when i used pedals in the loop. otherwise they are silent like mice!!

Agreed. My Herbert is the same way - quiet as can be even cranked to demolition volumes. Try preamp tube changes. Even if they sound fine to you, it doesn't mean they're not microphonic to some degree. Worth a shot at least and if you choose to do so I'd go with Peter's recommendation on those.

I have some of the problems that i have read here.

But to be sure I will ask any way so I know what to do.

I have a guitar which has passive high output pick-up (BO~EL MC 7) and I always get a lot of feedback. I already have cut down on the gain and always have a low volume at the pre-amp (25%).
But I still got mayor feedback when I not mute my strings.

Also when I use my kill-switch on my guitar and the herbert is on channel 3 there is always a shhhhh noise. But if my memory serves me right that herbies are dead quit on all channels?

Should I by a noise gate or should I re tube the beast?

And is it possible to get a better mid range with new or different tubes?
Because at the moment i'm not totally satisfied with the mid-range of the Herbert. I always have the mid at 100% and the mid cut off because I don’t want to cut a way mid when I need more ;).

Feedback is a delicate issue. Some players like gain and volume levels that just excel at feedback. If changing your levels for less feedback doesn't suit you you will need a gate. I use the smart gate and love it.

If swapping tubes doesn't cure enough of the hiss your experiences then you'll need a noise suppressor in the loop also, the isp decimator is choice here.

As for the amp being quiet; they are. does that mean absolutely no hiss will be present; no. it just shouldn't be obtrusive like say a 5150.

mid range... could be your speakers... 6l6s have a cleaner bite less sizzle than el34s, i tried em in herbert. also preamp tubes change your sound a lot.But for me it was my cabinet not letting the mids rip, change your speakers or cab, and you will change your sound.

Thanks for the feedback

Feedback is nice, so now and then. But not during staccato riffs and ect.
But isn't feedback not also a exemple of old tubes? If I read correctly somewhere? But if the feedback stays I will defiantly get a ISP decimator.

@Crabby:
I allready changed my cab. I first owned a Bogner OS 2x12 but that cab defiantly didn't got the mid across. So I tried a lot of different cabs and it turned out that the Engl PRO XXL with V30 was the best option (I also tried new Diezel cabs but sorry peter these work not for me)

What kind of sound differences you can have when you change the pre-amp tubes?

i just play around with diff brands in each socket, now i have all mesa tubes in it two of the super clean ones in v1 and clean and mesa el34s for power. Their are only a few tube manufaturers dont get caught up in names most are relabled, i use mesa tubes in both diezels 1, the dealer is close to me, 2 they are guarenteed for 6 months, tested true. I have had mullards, rubys, groove tubes, jjs, tung sol, many again are just relabled, the mesa work great for me, i believe they are sovteks.

ISP Decimator Pro Rack G. Such a great investment. Seriously, just drop the dough once and never worry about your noise suppressor coming up short in ANY circumstance ever again.

This.
