I want to redo my Ibanez PGM and the old neck is twisted and besides that I want a maple neck and board. Is there anyone reliable out there making good replacement necks? Links?

Kage

Absolutely, positively not! I have been to that well, Kage and I have tried to get reliable service from every one of the main guys and they are all complete flakes unable to deliver in any acceptable timeframe (like... you know... 1 and a half years! :bash: )

Don't waste your time.

Can't you just get one from Ibanez? You have a verifiable guitar...

These guys might be worth a look...

I'd dig around on jemsite, see what they say. Some of those older ibanez necks would warp if you looked at them crosseyed... I think my favorite Ibanez neck profile is the Jem. It's still thin but not so bad that it cramps my hands like the wizard necks and you can't feel the trussrod on the back of the neck. :)

jemsite like the poster above said...i think the guy that runs ibanezrules.com posts there...don't know anything about him but he might could help

Sorry for the noob question but how do neck's get twisted anyways?

I spent a ton of time on jemsite. I went through several builders recommended there over several years and ended up with NOT ONE NECK DELIVERED. It is just crazy - the ibby custom clone builders are the flakiest of any custom builders I've ever dealt with and that is saying a lot...

Hey maybe someone will deliver... I was patient, I tried to work with people, I got poor delivery estimates that were exceeded time and time again with no explanation or apology. I was made to feel like these guys were doing ME a favor or something... crazy...

In the case of the ibanez necks that I've owned, too thin neck plus one piece neck = warp tour '87. :) Necks can shift, some just aren't stiff enough and get twisted. Ibanez ended up putting a big strip of wood along the middle, and some guitars I've owned with thin necks are made of different pieces that are glued together with the grain opposed, to resist twisting.

Kage, is it an older 'regular' four bolt neck? All of the ibanez guitars I've had twisty troubles with in the past were like that.

Hey, and here's an idea... could you have a luthier replace the fingerboard for maple and while they have it open put a better truss rod or reinforcement in it? Might be a little pricier but you could have any good luthier do it instead of being hostage to the ibanez aftermarket dudes.

I've heard that Christopher Woods does nice work but can be slow. Steve, is this one of the guys who you contacted?

At this point, I can honestly say that I don't even remember all the names of the ones I tried to work with.... For sure skip monster guitar and Chris Woods... many of the rest won't even answer your emails anyway...

Wow, thats really bad...

+1 for Steve's comments according to what I've read at Jemsite. Many problems with basically all the Ibanez "clone" builders... Kage, you might be able to buy a replacement neck from Ibanez with the help of an Ibanez dealer.

That's the cure for sure. The neck can be planed flat with the board off. If the wood is fully dry now and stable this will work fine. Also, you may want to release all pressure on the truss rod, manually manipulate it against the twist and hold it while you tighten up the truss rod again. Some truss rods can bind in a narrow channel rout and be the cause of the twist in the first place.

Hi Kage,

you could try lgm guitars in Canada, Jeremy is authorized by Ibanez to customize necks, so he has the logo water slides for the headstock. Also project guitar has lot of builders there contact Brian(site owner) or westheman(top mod) for who does the best work there.

cheers Rick

Kage, there's a guy over on SevenString.org under the name Elysian who makes some pretty awesome Ibanez based guitars. i think he also has a company called Elysian Custom Guitars. his work looks pretty good, maybe worth checking out.
