The "DSL/TSL can't do metal thing" is either from the result of one of two things, IMO:
1. people that don't play in a band that like using TONS of gain (that would sound SHIT live or in a recording) don't like them.
2. People that prefer the more modern lower mid voicing of Mesas/bogners/framus etc.
IMO, the crunch channel on the DSL is sweet, and with a boost is great. My brother has one and while I prefer my Bogner, I could definitely get by with the DSL no problem. I'm not as partial to the lead channel on the DSL as I am the crunch channel though.
