I respect the opinions of the people on here, as there are some really good guitarists, builders, etc with way more knowledge than me. Are the WGS speakers really as good as, or even better than their Celestion counterparts? Or is it more along the lines of they're cheaper but still sound pretty good, better than Sheffields at least lol

WGS speakers sound good at low to medium volumes. In that sense it's more a matter of personal taste. The huge downfall of WGS is they start to fall apart; meaning lose definition, once you start approaching full band volumes. Celestions on the other hand will remain articulate and arguably sound better the more you push them.

If you're looking for a good Celestion alternative check out Weber or Scumback speakers. Both are high quality and every bit as good or better than Celestions. Heck, I'd even go Mojotone before WGS.

When they were $60 they were a great value compared to the speakers they attempted to copy. Now not really. Of the ones I've tried, I'll pay the extra for the real deal. But hey, I think every amp sounds like shit unless it's ran through V30's so what do I know? Lol!

I bought 4 or 5 of them when they first launched for some super low price. I liked them back then. Eventually sold them all but don't remember having any issues. Don't remember pushing them much past rehearsal volume though.

Wow I must’ve been def. I owned some Retro 30’s and Green Berets back in 2011 and they seem to have held up ok in a loud metal band context. Have things changed since then?

Nope.

As others said, throw a lot of wattage at them and they’ll wilt. Great though, at low/medium vol. I’ve had ET65s and reapers. The ET 65s sound very close to the darker version of a Celestion 65; but when I turned up the SLO I had they started to woof/fart out.

I have some green berets in a mesa maverick. For $50 a piece they are pretty good. Definitely have the woody sounds you get from greenbacks.

For what they want now, just get the real thing.

We tried a couple, but none were Celestion killers.

Honestly, I don't think I would care if I never used a non-Celestion speaker again, I even prefer them with clean Fenders.
100% with you on this. Saw JD Simo many years back using a deluxe reverb with a vintage 30 and started trying that with my own fenders- it’s killer for everything. If it ain’t Celestion I don’t want it

There are some others that do sound amazing though…JBL 120s, Altec 417s, EVM 12Ls, and some Fanes although I’m trusting others on those. I have the first 3 though.

Yeah, I’ve got some Retro 30’s in a 2x12 I dig a lot. They handle about as well as I’d expect two 30-watt speakers to handle. Hahah my Black Shadow 2x12 slays the shit out of it, but that slays the shit out of most 4x12’s in general.

The Retro 30’s are 75 watts.

I think they're really good quality and a decent value. Beyond that though, they aren't dead ringers for their Celestion counterparts, and like any other speaker, it really boils down to whether they sound good to you. I'm glad I tried them, but where I want a Celestion sound, I have Celestions.

Tried the ET-65’s and they sound very close to the Celestion 65’s. Don’t like the Celestions, so the WGS I don’t like either.
The British Lead sound, mic up and record really great. Too bad they discontinued those.
