Are Winged C Power Tubes worth the extra $?

I would say no EXCEPT for SED Winged C 6550s...those were the best 6550s i played. everything else ( 34s, 6L6) i thought Rubys were cool. JJs were fine also.

I really love their 6550s in both my Twin Jet and Rev 2 Uberschalls. Their EL34's are too sizzly on the top end and not worth the higher price compared to JJ E34Ls. I have not tried their KT88s; anybody care to shed some light on them?

The last 2 DSL's I've bought both had winged C's when I got them. Both times I swapped them for JJ's and the sound improved drastically.

For 6L6's I tend to prefer JJ's. I don't care who hates on them...they have always been a great power tube to me. Brought life to my Soldano HR50+. Their KT88's aalso sounded great in my VHT Ultra Lead.

Personally speaking I find everyone's ears are different and my advice is to try everything you can afford.Sooner or later you'll find a tube that you'll like. For me the Winged C 6L6 is perfect in my Laney's but every amp and ear is different.

Me too Steve, they are my current favorite EL34 for use with my old Marshalls! Also very affordable too and i have had no issues with reliability so far

I only tried the winged c el34's. they are better sound than the jj's. Not sure if worth 3 times more though. The mids a more complex, but when you play with a band these subtle changes get lost in the mix. I would assume that its similar with 6l6. JJ makes great 6l6 tubes already so i would just go for that.

I like the el34"s but was not overly impressed with the 6l6's. They sounded good but not worth the extra money. I'm probably going to try those Ruby EL34's next time.
