Some estimate there are over 4,000 religions in the entire world. I’m not sure there are thousands in India alone.

It's not hard to imagine.

World's largest population.
22 official languages but over 700 spoken.
Similar deal with religions - "official" and non-official.

I couldn't find anything on the 'net to support my comment right now, but I do remember learning back in the '90s from an authoritative source that there were many hundreds and likely over 1000 at that time.
