NEWS: BLACK METAL IS FOR EVERYONE SYMPOSIUM ANNOUNCED
"In honor of Black History Month, there will be a symposium/concert regarding black metal and how it’s for everyone, regardless of race or religion. It’ll take place February 28 and 29, 2024 at Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.
Black metal is a subgenre of metal that consists of fast tempos, heavy guitar, and screaming vocals. Whilst it’s not a genre for all, it’s reached a popularity globally with the “second wave” during the 1990s in Scandinavia. It got a bad reputation when it became associated with chuch arson, Satanism, and acts of extreme violence as it first started out. Nowadays, musicians within the genre are changing with messages with topics such as environmental causes, social justice, and anti-racism across the world, all whilst keeping to the noisy and aggressive sounds.
Alongside the concert, there are also different activities that will be taking place, including roundtable discussions, artist meet & greets, marketplaces, and more. The lineup of participants is: Amory Abott, Larissa Glasser, Joan Jocson-Singh, Rose Johnson, Margaret Killjoy, Daniel Lukes, Sanimir Panayotov, Michael S. Dodson, Shane Greene, Olga Rodriguez-Ulloa and Rebekah Sheldon. There have also been additional support provided by the Office of the Vice President for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, the College Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the College Arts and Humanities Institute and the Media School. It was funded by Indiana University’s Arts and Humanities Council and organized by Michael S. Dodson.
Black Metal Rainbows is an anthology that’s over 400 pages long about radical, queer and leftist writings and artworks that demonstrate the openness and inclusivity of the genre. These tales come from a wide range of over 80 writers, artists, activisits and visionaries. It’s been published by PM Press/Between The Lines Books."
