I remember that pic of you painting with no respirator... :loco:

We got a guy at work that sprays like that and has been painting like that for the last 6 years where I work..
Last year Osha Came in while he was painting and we got fined 6k
And he still sprays like that...
One night I stayed over and he was there and didnt think anyone was there.. And I look in on him and he is painting like that with a Saint Pauli Girl beer in his hand

And GM Sunset Orange Metallic is darker and deeper color than the color in the pics above...But GM is good for just changing the name of the colors instead of changing the actual colors
I shit you not, I knew a guy that painted without a respirator and smoked cigarettes at the same time, but he was carefull not to get ashes in the paint, no joke, odd thing is he passed away several years ago.

Yeh I have seen that same guy do the same and actually feel bad for him, but he does not give a shit...

I gave up explaining to people the difference between respirators and dust masks and where and why you should wear each one long a go because people dont listen and they always know it all...

Anybody use NCT clearcoat?? That was one of my faves in the auto world, extremely durable. My guess is most use the reg DAU clear, easiest to work with.
That shit is ancient. I haven't used DAU for 15 years
So what ARE you using NOW??
My shop uses BASF Vortex waterborne. Not sure what the clear is they use, but it is sweet stuff, as I said I stay in the office now a days.
I was a PPG guy for years but DAU was outdated 15 years ago and discontinued 4-5 years ago.

The shop i used to work at used BASF (RM). All the under coats on the Camaro are RM. We were using Diamont base and DC92 clear. I guess everyone's gone to waterborne now.

Right out of high school I started working for a guy who had a shop, worked for him for 8 years. He never wore a respirator. He drank a case of beer a day at the shop, sprayed Dupont Centari all day with a cig hanging out of his mouth while he was painting and drank beer in between coats. I'm pretty sure he's still alive.

Painted the guitar this evening. Two coats of primer, one heavy, one light. 2 coats of Nason base coat black, and 3 coats of Nason clear with a red pearl mixed in. Should have a nice metallic plum hughe in the sun or stage lights. Pics to follow tomorrow.

Damn did we work together???  Swear that's exactly how the guy who taught me was. He's still kickin too.

Cool info! Thanks,
The only reason I assumed that was from restoring a 1957 corvette. They were painted with nitro originally for some reason.

Hey...

If you use Automotive paint stay with the SAME SYSTEM! Use a primer that is recommended for the paint you are using... And a Clear from the same brand meant to be used over your top coats.

You don't need to sand the Primer if you have going right Over with the Paint because you will have Chemical Adhesion. If you wait till the next day you will have to sand.

Don't Sand Metallic top coats... You will Bruise the Metallic I personally wouldn't use anything courser than 1200 for top coats, and 2000 before buffing.

If your really good with a gun, and you HAVE a Good Gun like a SATA then you won't need to sand your top coats at all... I never do.

BE ADVISED... GUITAR MANUFACTURERS HAVE GONE BACK TO THIN LAQUER PAINT WITH MINIMAL COATS TO GET THE BEST TONE... THICK AUTO PAINTS WILL SEAL IN THE RESONANCE.

Have Fun! :D

I should probably update too - i no longer use 1200 on the primer side before paint, i stop at 600 grit now. managed to get just as good looking paint jobs without the 800 or 1200 steps on the primer for adhesion. everything else is the same for me

paint it up and have fun

Hey glpg80

One thing yiu didnt elaborate on here was finishing after your final coat of clear. Please do :)
