Badlands tone

This album was released right after I landed in L.A. to start my year at G.I.T. I started in March of '89 and I think this came out in May??

The first Blue Murder album came out in April. I flat wore those discs OUT that year. Both CD's are like a magic Time Machine for me: - any track from either disc and I am magically transported back to West Hollywood - summer of '89.

I read years that Jake used a Marshall JTM 45 and a Dimarzio Very Metal pedal on that first album . I think his speakers were EVs
I searched out and bought a Dimarzio Very Metal Pedal to test that theory after I read it somewhere.....it was more like a RAT pedal....I did not hear the Badlands first album with the Dimarzio VMP and I gave it a really good try.:dunno:

There are more Jake tones in a Marshall SL/2203 with a Boss OD1 or SD-1 by a longshot so don't waste your money on the VM pedal.

I find the main Jake trick is setting the drive level to about 9-10 o'clock depending on how much dirt you want in the tone depending on the amp, that drive level gives it that dirty/slightly fuzzy effect, AFAIK level was always maxxed on the OD1.

He supposedly used a Black Cat OD for short time but I think that was on his solo albums.

The first and second albums were awesome.......Dusk is cool all in it's own way.

Dusk is very cool considering they just went in and slammed it out . I’ve read that was a Budda amp

I got right up from for this gig and I can confirm he likes to play loud

I seen him in 2019 with RDC and his Friedman 50 watters were dimed.........He also had an RJS 100 watt amp but he was using the Friedman's near as I could tell. It was a really good show and he played well. Since I missed Badlands in their hayday I had to make due......................

That Dimarzio pedal is a Rat copy from what I have read.
