I love Db tuning some van halen tunes

Wrong thread mate, we're talking about C# tuning, not Db! :gethim:

Db and C# are enharmonic Db Ab Db Gb Bb Eb = C#, G#, C#, F#, A#, D#
Love that tuning though all my guitars are tuned to it.

:) I was just messing with you man. I know the two are enharmonic. C# standard is my favourite tuning , it's a great medium for nice lows while still being able to be tight enough to do thrash and so on. Because of this I find it easy to be more creative using different keys, I don't find it hard to just not use the lowest..say...2 frets, but I can go that extra bit lower if I need to. :D

Also it's easy to figure out with my limited knowledge of music theory (I mean, it's good for a 16 year old guitar player but not great) because it's all in the relative minor of what I'd be playing in E :D

I call it C#, but I call D# Eb, and Bb A# etc, just what I'm used to. Thanks for the band suggetsion.

Hey from that little bit you know more theory then i did when i was 16!
Its a great tuning and as you said it sounds big but it doesnt turn into much on the low strings like Drop C i hated playing in that tuning i love playing big chords and with Drop C it sounded like i was playing R 3 5 every chord and you could never hear anything else.

I played in a band for about 4 years where our tuning was C# standard. I really like it.

God! I hate "drop" tunings. Maybe it's just my innability to play faux barre chords. I like C standard, if you are going to tune ridiculously low, go for broke. Don't stop at #...

Yet another useless, tangencial post...

C standard just sounds like mush, and as i stated above Drop C# calls for some intreasting chords. The biggest reason for changing tunnings is to match up to the range of the vocalist.

Meshuggah plays in F, and they're tighter than a gnat's poop chute. It's all in how you dial in the amp and approach the tuning.

All in the style of music as well, I should have been more clear then saying it sounds like mush for everything, For the style of music i play it wouldnt work to well tis all.

I don't even consider C standard that low of a tuning. It never sounds mushy at all to me, unless maybe you're using 9-42's.

I hear the mush complaint. But I know you can figure a way to make it sound great and tight, just takes some dedication. I get a good deal of mush in C# standard, and thats only cuz of the way my setup is set up. Mahogany everything and thick strings. And Im too lazy to find the perfect sound in that low because no one else I know wants to play down there :aww:

Finally have been allowed to leave my guitars in D# standard, and that compramise makes me too happy. The tunings arguments are just too annoying when coupled with switching tunings every other song.

25.5", 11-50 strings. :) I think I'm good. I just put it in drop C#, was in C# a couple days ago, floyd is annoying, but hey. sounds good. I loosened the neck a little, about to look at intonation.

'Evergreen Terrace' plays in drop C#
'Attack Attack!' first album (Someday Came Suddenly) and 'Of Mice & Men' as well written in drop C# tune.
Lamb of God last release (Resolution) is also in drop C# despite all their other albums.

Didn't see if anyone else posted, but Deftones are often in C#. And when they are, it sounds killer.

No More Tears

It's all about string gauge & setup
