My bass player, John, and I are working on improving his recorded tone. I told John it's probably a good idea to pick a bass player whos's tone gets close to what his idea of what good tone sounds like. Interestingly enough, he couldn't think of anybody off the top of his head. He said he generally listens to what the bass is doing and not so much the tone.

So, which rock bass players have the hot tone out there? I doun't mean playing abilities...just tone.

Justin Chancellor
Eric Avery

Two bass players from two bands that do absolutely nothing for me. Still, it's about tone so I guess I'll have to give the tone a listen to.

Tim Commerford

Honourable mentions:
Duff McKagen
Martin Mendez
Justin Chancellor
Stefan Lessard
Flea

Not sure if these guys are necessarily rock, but they're my fav bass players in terms of just tone.

I've always thought that Eddie Jackson had great bass tone.

Also, Adam from Machine Head has great bass tone, but that might be too metal... :dunno:

Beat me to it - Eddie Jackson ! Punchy, round, but full & defined at the same time

Other than those mentioned, I loved the tone that Hunter Burgan from AFI got on Sing the Sorrow..

Cool, lots of names to check out. I'm a Queensryche fan but I never really paid any attention to just the tone of the bass player. I've got lots of their stuff so that's probably a good place for me to start.

I've always loved a huge, rumbling bass sound as opposed to overly tight and bright. So;

Geezer Butler
Chris Squire
John Entwhistle
Dug Pinnick

Not really into many rock bassist tones, my favs are all jazz and fusion cats.

Unique bass tones:

Dug (Kings X)
Geddy Lee (Rush)
Che' (Jimmies Chicken Shack)
Billy Sheehan

Now, Geddy Lee's tone IS something that made my ears stand up and listen closer. Maybe something from "Moving Pictures."

I forgot - Bruce Thomas bass player for Elvis Costello. Very under-rated player that has a huge, punchy tone....

I guess I'm a cork sniffer too 'cause I perfer the tone of fusion players also...they are more interesting IMHO. But, were doing rock stuff so I'm looking for references in the genre.

I do enjoy the vino!
