Tis true, most rock guys tone is not very good as they are rarely in front like jazz cats or fusion dudes.

Doug Pinnick from Kings X is the only player who's bass tone I have been stunned by. All the rest of them are playing bass. I don't want to hear their tone getting in the way of the guitar tone. Bury them in the mix. The best way to do this is give them the wrong directions to the studio that you are mixing at.

actually I like Steve Harris, Geddy Lee, Dennis Dunaway (original Alice Cooper band). Those are all somewhat distorted, I think that sounds cool.

usually anyone that uses a Sansamp sounds good and cuts through.... I love what the sansamp does for bass tone... brings out the top of the strings so nicely...

Geddy Lee (Rush) - his Avalon DI / Sansamp / Palmer stuff
Dug Pinnick - any of his tones are amazing!
Robert Deleo (STP) - his tone on Purple was AMAZING! Definitely one of the most underrated bassists ever!!!
