Belated NAD - JVM 410

This was the amp that supposedly was gonna put modders and small builders out of business cause it was just so amazing according to the popular folk here at the time. I’m sure it can sound great
I think this is exactly why it is much maligned - just crazy high expectations, particularly around covering all prior eras of marshalls.

If they had only come out with the OD channel(s) and just said a higher gain Marshall, I am convinced people would be much more positive about the model.

To be fair, this is the only place I really see them as well as the DSL’s bashed the way they are, the 210’s seem pretty popular everywhere else, if you only came here though you might believe they were these unusable hunks of shit

What other forums give them great reviews? I don't go on other forums, so I wouldn't know. I don't think anyone here is saying they're terrible nor that they can't sound good or useable so much as that there are simply better sounding amps out there for what they offer if you can pony up a bit more. For the price there's never been any argument I've seen that DSL's aren't a very good value. I think we just are blunt and cut to the chase that if one has the means the 2203/4's just sound and feel plain better (a lot better to me). Are they 3x the price (or more) better? No, but neither is a IIC+ vs a Mark IV or III or Rev C vs G. Better resale value typically with the more desirable items as well as a nice bonus

I agree, but that was the hype around here now almost 20 years ago about this amp. I believe there was even a big bulk buy of 20 amps or something so guys could get the thing early. It was supposed to be THE amp
Understand and I remember the big group order but again, no amp is THE amp for everyone. It's THE amp for me and pretty much has been since it's release but it's time it gets updated. Even the designer Santiago said parts of the amp need to be updated. I have zero faith in Marshall to do anything right anymore though.

I also have zero issue with people who don't like the JVM because I don't give a shit, I like what I like. I remember people on this forum bashing the 5150 as well, it's my second favorite amp I've ever owned and now one of the benchmarks of high gain. What works for me works, who cares what anyone else thinks.

Well said! 👍🏻

Update.

Fuses blew again. This time, it burned right in front of my eyes.

I'm actually quite certain it's the fuse holder.

I'm not sure if my wires will work, so I guess I'll send it to the tech after all. Bummer

Did you get the right fuse, (slow blow vs. fast?) I had a buddy that had a 410 he retubed after blowing a fuse, and he kept replacing it with the wrong one, it kept blowing.

Are we talking about a power tube misaligned? I've seen people break the guide key off and put it back in wrong. It'll blow the fuse immediately.

Yeah, slow blow 10A.

Just to make sure, I put one of the original fuses that *didn't* blow, in the socket that blew two fuses.

It blew.

So I'm gonna just hardwire it with a copper link

Marshall said 21 swg, so if this somehow doesn't fit, I'll just use some wires.

Thanks. Will get a proper recording some time later
I'm actually strongly considering acquiring one of these soon. Owned one briefly in 2017 and liked it...But didn't love it. But my tastes have changed considerably and I have a Marshall high-gain itch that I'd like to scratch. Look forward to more clips from you.

I bought one of these a few years ago, didn't love it, sold it, then bought another. OD1 and my TSL Lead channel sound nearly identical in the room, but the crunch and clean channels cover a lot more ground than the crunch and clean on the TSL.

I have to wonder what the hell they were thinking making the 205/210 models use OD2. I know it's an easy mod but I still think it's strange that the more "classic" Marshall-like high gain channel is only available in the 410. Now that it's been so long since release, I'm at least surprised there isn't like a "JVM Classic" 2-channel with OD1 and maybe a slightly different combination of modes in the clean/crunch channel... although I guess that might cannibalize DSL-HR sales.

Mine is also from 2007, but luckily haven't had any issues. Still has the FS3 and FS4 fuses, maybe I should get ahead of it maintenance wise and swap those out for the wire links. Thanks for the TSB @Code001

From my understanding of the manual the 205/210 has the 410's OD1 channel as it's second (overdrive) channel.

So, the JVM 205/210 has the Green Clean, Crunch Green and Orange on the 1st channel and OD1 Green, Orange and Red of the 410.

Nah it's the other way around. JVM205/210 has the OD2 Green/Orange/Red with the scooped out lower mids EQ values

Which is *fine,* for people who like OD2. But OD2 a bit further away from the traditional Marshall sound than OD1 is.
It's an easy change to make OD2 into OD1, 3 components:
1. Slope resistor on EQ for OD1 uses the 2203 value of 33k, OD2 uses a 47k resistor.
2. C31 change to 1n0
3. C32 change to 3n3
(Don't give me any credit for this, it's from the old JVM forums)

I'm just surprised Marshall hasn't done it in an "official" manner, shoot, and tack on another $100 to the price and call it the JVM "Vintage" or something. Kinda like how EVH does with the 5150 Stealth series amps, it's like 4 or 5 different values from the regular 5150 III and they charge $450 more for the Stealth lol. Ridiculous.
