Hey guys so I just purchased a new 5150III 50 watt head with 6L6's and have a question for other owners or people with experience with this amp. I currently have an Orange 2x12ppc OB cab with V30's. I'm not sure if I'm in love with this combo yet. I have read where people much prefer the matching EVH cab with the G12H speakers. Anyone care to share their personal experience and or preferences to this? I just bought the Orange a few months ago but am not opposed to ordering the EVH. Thanks for any input.

I had the 50w with a Mesa 4x12 loaded with V30's for a while. It sounded good, but I ultimately ended up selling the amp because the lead channel was a little too bright on the top end at band levels with V30's for my taste. I recently got to try my friend's newer 5150III with concentric pots, and really liked it through his EVH 2x12....but loved it through my 4x12 with Greenbacks. The G12H's and G12M's solved the things I didn't care for when I had mine paired with V30's.

Thanks for the response. Mine is the newer model with the concentric pots as well. For the money I think its worth my time to order the EVH 2x12 and do a comparison.

Mesa 2x12. Glorious!

The EVH50 thrives on speakers that can tame the top-end a bit.
G12-65, G12H30-55Hz, G12K-85/100, that sort of stuff.
I pair one of those with a V30 for the punch in my Mesa 2x12, but even more glorious-er, is the EVH through a Marshall 4x12 1960BX with Greenbacks!

I have two engl cabs with different speaks. I like the cab with v30’s, but my other cab has eminence governors in it and it sounds better when just using one cab, but together is the jam. I really like eminences with this amp.

I've got an old Marshall 4x12 with G12-65's and a Splawn 4x12 with Greenbacks and the EVH loves them both. Both of them together is downright boner inducing.

Greenies for me.
This all the way. When I had one, I used a Marshall 425B with the G12C greenies and it was killer. 65s work well too.

Hated the EVH 2x12 cab. Very bright and small sounding.

I play my 50w 6L6 through both a V30 loaded Mesa Trad. 412 and a V30 loaded Krank 412.

The key to running this amp with V30s is to keep the presence dial below 4/10, and compensate by raising the channel treble dials higher than normal.
This allows the V30s to handle the presence side of things while making the amp sound clearer and more punchy.

I use mine with a 1960A loaded with greenbacks. Love it.

Would it be beneficial to swap out one of the V30's in my Orange cab for a G12-65 or something similar?

EDIT: Looking at a Celestion G12H(55) speaker its around $200. Is there a cheaper alternative that's close to the G12h?

WGS ET-65 is a clone of the G12-65, a lot cheaper.

(But after owning one for a few years, I preferred the real deal by a pinch...a bit thicker/wider sounding. The ET-65 was more behaved, focussed...

I believe WGS has the Reaper as a G12H(55) clone.

Thanks for the response. I'll have to check that out. In the meantime my curiousity got the best of me and I ordered a Diezel 2x12 FL w/V30's yesterday. I wanted to compare the Orange open back to the Diezel FL closed back. I'll probably keep both and do speaker swaps in the Orange in the near future.

Make sure then to get one different speaker, so you can do a mix with the V30;
G12-65,
G12K-100 or 85
old G12T-75 (with the serifed font on the white label)
WGS ET-65 or Reaper

Each of these pair rather well with a V30.

Greenbacks are the best. V30's sound too scooped.
V30's scooped? Nah. V30's are known for their strong, midrange hump. G12-75's are known for scooped mids.
