Best "cheap" piece of gear you've ever bought

Back in 1998 I bought a 60's era Epiphone for $350 at a pawn shop. (It had mini humbuckers) I sold it for $1300. They didn't know what they had. Kramer F-1000 in excellent condition for $100.

I picked up this cheap Korean-made LP copy by Agile used online from GC for like $200, bought it mainly just to use to test pickups. I have owned a couple other of their LP's before and I didn't think they were all that great. This was a slightly nicer one with a real flame maple cap, but didn't expect much when I bought it.

Turned out to be one of the best sounding LP's I've ever played, and I own a bunch of real Gibsons including a R9. I haven't done anything to it but a setup and a little minor fretwork - it's all stock including the cheap Wilkinson PAF's. It just sounds like Jimmy Page any time you plug it in.

It was a studio guitar for several years and has been used to track by a bunch of artists. I've lost count of the number of people who have tried to buy it off of me/trade for it.

1. Carvin X-100 B
2. Arion Hot Watt 2, it replaced my Ibanez Tube Screamer on my pedalboard in the 80's .
3. Behringer AM100 Acoustic Modeler, it replaced my Boss AC 2

And this guitar, it can be lowered to all extremes and never has fret buzz. Better than my 1984 RR / Jackson .

And this guitar, can play as well as any of my 1980's Kramers or Jackson's.

Instead of talking killer gear snagged for cheap... I'll chime in with cool, cheap, and awesome. I got an old envelope filter when I first started playing off a buddy's older brother for free. He thought of it as a "lazy wah"...but I put it in between my distortion pedal and amp and kept it almost off. By just turning it up it gave me a "tube-like" vibe. I got a bigger amp and stuck it in the loop. Played that for a long time!

71 Traynor YBA 1A.... Canadian Marshall. Absolutely kills with an SD1. $200

Scored an Ibanez RG7620 for $500 when they all shot up to around $1K-$1300 but the best one was probably the brand new TC Electronics G-Force I saw sitting in a rack in the early 00’s at Sam Ash, they had it marked as a G-Major for $500. The G-Force was still selling for $1200 new at the time. I didn’t say a word, just told the sales guy I’d take it. When he was cashing me out he had to have a sales manager come swipe his card for something, sales manager looks at the G-Force and back at the screen, sighs and says “Fuck it, I don’t care”, swiped his card and walked away.

Around '04 I was able to pickup a Crate Blue Voodoo 150 and 300 for pretty much peanuts. I paid about $250-300 each. Later down the road; 2017 I think, I was able to grab a second BV 300 for just at $400.

Most people scoff at these thinking it's the crappy BV120 that sounds like a can of angry hornets. But 150 and 300 are completely different and monster amps. I'm not going to say they will blow everything out the water, but they could easily hold their own. I used them as my main rig for over a decade and never had a complaint. Everyone was shocked beyond belief when they realized they were Crate amps.

One of the fun parts with the BV300 was sneaking the volume up at practice, drowning out the entire band including the drummer, and still have headroom to spare.
