No, I actually haven’t tried it on V30’s yet surprisingly. I tried dark and flat mode, even the Burl pre to try to make it warmer, placed anywhere from way to the edge of the cone to right over the dust cap and I’m always getting this harsh quality that I don’t like. I’m a novice with recording, so it might just be user error on my end, but I haven’t liked it much so far
It isn’t user error, that is how they sound. Like an electric razor edge…all Sennheiser mics have that quality. They just suck for guitar.

You guys remember reza? Of course you do…I posted a thread years ago about this subject and we wound up speaking on the phone for about 10 or 15 minutes one day. That dude was the coolest most down to earth dude…complete opposite of what he portrayed in his postings. Have no idea why that memory popped up…lol

i would use 2 sm57 and learn mic placement.. google fredman technique.. if the sound is too fizzy, you can pull one mic back a little while listening, you will ear the mics getting a tiny bit out of phase, removing the nastyest frequencies (+-8khz and more)

i would also recommand either a real or virtual console strip to learn the basics..gainstaging, equing with a limited tool

Here's a Fredman comparo on a few different speakers. Still sounds like a 57, just improved.

Nothing like a bunch of guitar players arguing over mics 😂. 57s can obviously sound great. Just don’t believe that once they were made NO OTHER MICS CAN EVR! SOUND AS GOOD!!!!! lol

Without great acoustics, mic pre$$$, great rig, great cab, no grill cloth, recording digital, LACK OF EXPERTISE, 57s can sound moderately to extremely harsh.

Listen to the main riff of “Hold the Line” by Toto ( I know, come at me bro). That is SM57 all day everyday. That’s all I hear when I hear that riff! It definitely cuts!

Nope, fuck that guy.

Dude I was shocked….he was cool as shit. But as soon as he started posting here it was like flipping a switch. Ole carl got him finally. It was pretty epic.
Well, best case, he has some personality disorder. But the constant shitty bloated clips, name dropping, owning every amp ever, narcissistic BS….🤮🤮🤮

My favor Reza moment ever…I posted a Diezel Hagen clip. It was double tracked with one track being boosted. He immediately annihilates me on here for having the gall to boost a Diezel. Well, after he got through gargling Peter Diezel’s scrotum, about three, four weeks later, he posts a boosted Diezel clip! I of course called him out for the hypocrisy, and he Aspergered ©️ laughed it off. Strange shit to say the least.

the anti boost movement weirds me out…

Boosting cures erectile dysfunction. I even run my screamer 808 when I’m playing clean.

Everyone hears things differently so see if this reamp test helps you out.

Cool comparison. I find the 609 sounded good paired up but the 906 less so. The 906 can do the job on its own where as the 7B for example, did really well when it was paired. I should bust my 7B out, haven't really used it that much on guitars. I do find the dual mic ( any mic) often fills out the sound and make it sound more natural vs like a mic right on or slightly off the cone. "Natural" is subjective but everyone knows what a mic jammed to the cone sounds like. Those big album sounds sound like blended mics more often than not even if it is two of the same blended.

Reza for example, was a jam a mic up to the cone and produce fizzy tones type of guy imo. Didn't matter how expensive his amps were, they all sounded similar with a mic right up the cone's ass.

I'm having great luck with a 57 and 421. Using the 421 more often alone though.
