Best way to dial in ultra scooped metal tone on Herbert

I play through guitars with high output pickups and own the following amps: Diezel Herbert, Engl Powerball, Framus Cobra, Marshall JCM 200 TSL100, EVH 5150 III. No problem getting the mega scooped tone out of the amps other than the Diezel, and I expected the Diezel to be the one that would be the MOST natural for this. I must be doing something wrong because it just seems to be lacking the type of tone I'm after. Any recommendations?

Pump the actual mids up, way up, and use the mid scoop for the scoop so it stays tight and still sits in the mix. Lot's of presence and lot's of highs and bass about 2 o'clock and Deep in the same area. I would think that would get you close. Also, you should really consider some lower output pickups for your Diezel because it makes it punchier from not being overly compressed, anywhere from 9.6k to 14.5k I found works best. Anything more and it's gut wrenching punch goes away.

Cool, I'll give that a shot. Never would've considered the lower output pickups, but I do have a few guitars that have them. Thanks so much for your help, and I'll post a report on how it turned out. :)

Oh yeah, those settings you recommended are for channel 3 right?

I would say chan 2 in + mode and mid scoop active gives the best "chug for your money"
I also recommend passive pickups with mid-output. I prefer the SD Custom 5 myself!

Channel 2+ is thicker but either would work. 3 is more single note articulate. Which makes it better for leads.

One last question. I have heard that you can get the JCM800 sound pretty dead on with this amp. How do y'all (gotta say it, I'm from Texas) dial that tone in most effectively? Thanks again for all your responses.

Channel 2- with presence cranked for some high mids. I personally would probably boost it to thin it down some with lower gain settings on the amp to keep it open sounding. Honestly I haven't dabbled with that sound much but I was close with pots at noon in minus mode and presence cranked as per Duesy's suggestion but it still seemed thicker than an 800 so that's why I think a boost would be nice just to thin it out some. Nothing crazy on the boost though. Should let me know how it works if you do it.

I never have trouble dialing in a mid scoop on the Herbert, but I don't really use the onboard to do it. I always use an eq in the loop of every amp (MXR 10 band or rackmount 31 band). If I want to scoop it, I pull out the 500 Hz band pretty heavily, sliders on either side around half or a little less and everything else to taste. I normally don't use the mid cut function and I keep the mids around 11:00 to noon on the amp. This keeps the sustain from the preamp up and scoops the sound as it passes to the power amp. I use the series loop for this.

I mainly use active pickups, EMGs and Duncan Blackouts, but I agree, you don't really want to slam the Herbert too hard. I actually roll off the volume on the guitar pretty good when I'm playing through it.

Thanks for your advice guys. I tried everything from yesterday and I'm not gonna say it didn't work...it did, but it's just not what I seem to get pretty easily from the Framus Cobra, Engl Powerball or the 5150 III. I may try the EQ, but I'm kindof let down. I had always heard that Uber gain was the specialty of this amp, but I seem to be having to work really hard to get it there. If I'm making a bad move and the pedal is the answer to my prayers, then I'm all ears for sure. Otherwise I think it'll hit Ebay pretty soon. :(

what are you after?

name a band....a guitarist that has the tone you're after, and we'll tell you .........if you say ENGL and FRAMUS have what you want, then buddy, sorry but Diezels are VEEEEEEEERY different animals......

Diezels like Mids........

Can you take a pic of the settings or tell what you ended up with?

I'm finding it very hard to believe that the op can get an "ultra-scooped sound" from the other amps, but not the Herbert...that doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

Not for the tr00 Metllica soundz...and I guess that's one of the reasons why we have the midcut, and that's why I don't understand the topic...

The really scooped Metallica tones are the early ones, and I don't know why you would want to cop those.

It's a common misconception that scooping the mids makes it sound more "Metal". If anything, having those razor sharp mids gives the amp a snarl that just sounds demented.

I think you're misunderstanding me: I'm not for or against midcut, I'm just saying that I don't get how the op can't dial in scooped sounds with a Herbert, when he can with amps that have no midcut, or similar, feature.

Because Diezel's are naturally mid heavy, being descendants of Marshalls?

I have no idea, I have honestly never scooped my mids.
