I've owned several of these over the years. And while I have always been a big Dime fan, I was never really trying to achieve his tone. Now Nuno on the other hand... I actively chased his tone for years. ADA MP-1s and all.. lol! At any rate, I have always liked this pickup. It sounds like both a humbucker and a single-coil at the same time. You get that bottom end and low miss of a humbucker, but you also get the stringy high end of a single. I have found that alder is the best body wood for these. I also prefer them with a rosewood board, but my Charvel Journeyman is being worked over at the moment. So here for your listening pleasure...

I have a Bill and Becky in my Mahogany Nuno N4...it slays! \m/

I want to get one of these to check out but am confused which one to get and who is the better manufacturer of these. I'm most interested in the Nuno sounding one.

Wilde Pickups still has the Bill and Becky version available. Not spendy either.

Check out the Dimebucker Seymour wound it to sounds like an L500XL

SFW amazing sounds!! And I think sound great also with maple neck and fingerboard, your video is the confirm!
Do you have only volume pot connected in your guitar or also a tone pot?
Nuno used the L500L model, It is more low output and near to a Paf output and I think He used in the past the Wilde pickups and not the Bill Lawrence USA. I've tried the bill lawrence usa and It sounds sterile and very cold without dynamic!

Joel I watch Evert Video you post & your tone is awesome. Thank you for posting so many pickup videos. Now if only I could decide what I might switch to from EMG's, if I switch at all.

I have a Bill and Becky 500 as well and you described it well. Great note seperation and thinner up top but that also is Nuno's signature sound. His leads always cut but they were definitely not thick. Anyway, I had emailed them years ago and to my knowledge, he didn't actually use the XL but the 500L. I have the L and it is plenty hot in case you are worried about it's ability to crunch up. I am sure some Nuno nerds will fill in the gaps.

I believe L500-L is what you want for Nuno, just under the XL gain wise.

This goes back and forth every time it comes up... Did Nuno use a L500L or L500XL??? I purchased both to covers my bases but I haven't; installed either yet. I do hear alot of Dimebag's guitar tone in Nuno's tone, the pinched harmonics and and I'm not sure the output of a L500L would be enough so I tend to lean towards the L500XL. I have one last guitar that I am building and that is my Nuno strat.

Listen, if you can play like Nuno, you could stick a PAF in an alder strat and run a rat through any MArshall into greenbacks and you would be "close". I would just try both in your guitar and see which one you like better. I liked the L500L But the thin high end sort of got old for a while. I mean do I want to not have Nuno's hands and solo with that thin cutting tone all the time? I like it softer on top so I went with Aldrich or Alnico II JB in bridge.

Bill (RIP) and Becky won't talk to you about DC resistance or output... only inductance.

FWIW, the L500XL's I've had measured around 11.2K Ohms. ;)

Also, Becky has a bad habit of trying to talk you out of the pickup you want and into something else.

Another interesting tidbit, the lawrence L-90 was also used by Matthias Jabs in the early days so some of those bitchin early Scorps tone are literally a hot L-90 pup driving a cranked Marshall JMP with the echoplex adding a slight boost. His tone is so iconic on those records in the 80's.

Also keep in mind the NUNO tone from porno was an ADA-MP1 into a Mesa Simulcas Poweramp into a Marshall Cab with Greenbacks. This info came from Michael Wagener himself. The producer of Pornografitti, I was told by Nuno he used the same rig on 3 sides as well. Live it was a totally different setup.

On the first records it was a 78 2203 Marshall with a Rat.

Also as per Mike Fortin Nuno still has this Marshall and its been Modded by Mike for a more "EVH / Jose" Tone.

I thought first album was Laney Pro tube with Rat? Doesn't really matter really.. we are all so obsessed about exact recording chain when we know time and time again that the producer and the console it was recorded through also has a huge part in creating the tone.

Same amp as a 78 Marshall actually internally.... but I was told Marshall. I could be wrong, just going by what i was told. You know how this shit gets blown out of proportion.... LOL

I have a jcm800 Pro tubes clone that was a 6 knobber. Those were the "clones" but they had a bass boost and gain boost. A bit muddy and fizzy. His was supposed to be the 8 knob Laney which had more gain still. That is the one that was supposed to be on that album. I think you hit it though, the truth lies somewhere in between.

-AND!!!...-
-None of them, Not One... are even in the same ball park as what the original Genius, Mad Scientist...... Mr. Bill Lawrence made before his death, the first rail hb that I remember seeing-(available in any color you want as long as it's cream)-I would¬(·₩θθ[)·?·)- take my amp, a DOD PREAMP 250-(yellow)-and this, this,.. "thing!!" with me & put it in any guitar... The wood~₩θμ£[) make no difference at all..

-(there's an all white -(with a red lightning bolt across the front)- WESTONE Bass with a Kahler trem floating around New England with an original XL500 in it, I'd pay $500 to have it back)-
