Bogner Twin JET + EL34 Conversion

You guys. Luckily for me I am quite handy with an iron. This conversion is simple. Do tell. Doesn't the change affect the punch and volume of the amp because of the output difference? With 34's it's now a hundred watter not 150. Steve said it killed and now you jumped in the boat. I have to know. I will have mine soon. Fred told the dealer it will two weeks max.

I did the Conversion Thursday night but my EL34 tubes were not matched and in the proper range. Lucky for me Laura here on the forum set me up with some new tubes and I got them this morning. I also swapped out the chinese preamp tubes for some different ones to experiment.

First I will tell you volume is not affected at all, the wattage must not matter much. As far as punch goes, it may lose a small bit of punch, but not much and the musical affect of the EL34's in this amp is just gorgeous. It also is much nastier and more growl now than before. I can set my mids up higher and they sound better to me.

I am a big fan of this amp with both sets of tubes, but I think I like the overall bass and mid response of the EL34's better, as well as I like the warmth of the EL34s better in it.

A few things to note when you get yours. The treble acts like a volume control in reverse, turn treble down and the volume increases. This is so freaking crazy strange it is insane. The presence/treble/mids act very different from any amp I have owned and the EL34's tame this a bit. But be ready to tweak this amp much different from any amp you have ever had.

The conversion makes the depth control and presence control for the power amp a bit more pleasing to me as well.

I do not think you can go wrong with KT88's or EL34's, but I think anybody who got rid of this without hearing with EL34's might have kept it. Although we all have different tastes so maybe not.

I am going to say this again, there are a lot of great amps out there, but this one is so doing it for me right now it is crazy and the EL34's did not hurt in any way at all!!!!

My Herbert is gone, and honestly will not be missed at all as I like the Bogner mids and voicing so much better, again opinion and subjective. The band agreed that the TJ filled the room more than the Herbert and it was just more pleasing to the ear. And these guys have been on my rear to get another Herbert for a while now. Wait till they hear with the EL34's I think they will be so pleasantly pleased.

Good luck on the wait, and when she arrives ask any questions as Se7en and Steve_K both can chime in and give you a lot of help on the TJ as well. Best Bogner ever (for me)!!

Thansk Again

Everything is subjective and each person has different tones they want to achieve but Bogner is my favorite amp voicing and my list is as follows:

1) Twin Jet
2) Fish
3) XTC 20th

I have tried the 101b and Classic as well and they are nice. Never had any of the other flavors but I am sure they all rock.

I am a big fan of the Diezel Herbert as well, but it just was overkill with the Twin Jet and as stated in the previous post it was not a hard decision for me between the two.

One more thing to add is the TJ channel 1 with EL34's makes my modified Marshall gas go away as well. Not exactly like most Marshalls you hear, but the gain structure and tonality is perfect for the low/mid/edge of high gain and as stated, Channel 2, just rocks it over the edge!

It's so cool to see so many people are into 34's in that amp,
I ordered mine direct from bogner with JJ EL34's, they actually used the regular uberschall transformators with it, I really enjoy playing it, sounds really massive and the bogner voicing is something I was dreaming on for years, this is really the only amp for me, and the clean channel does great cleans to my opinion, abit tricky to eq though, but my band agreed that through the ENGL cab I played the cleans didnt sound any less better than my former rivera knucklehead reverb.

lol after reading all the happy posts about kt88 to el34 conversion, i am really happy that i got my twin jet with EL34

100 or 150 watts, what's the point? Its all loud.

34's rule in the TJ - yes it is subjective, but I haven't seen anyone disagree yet with the conversion. Most of us have had some primo boooootique amps and customs and have an ear for the tone that pleases.

Easy stuff to convert. Bogner piggybacks two resistors for that reason in R402. The bottom is a 33 and the top a 22. Req = 14 when paralleled for a KT88 bias range. Snip the top resistor off and it puts you in the 34 range. But, you need to have a matched quad with PC range of 38-42 or close. The bias adjust is only about 180 degree's and it has a tight range. Go lower or higher on the tube rating, you will be out of range. So, get on to Laura and tell her you need Steve's SED Matched Quad of SED's for the TJ.

I really did not think I could like the amp any more, but yes I really dig the EL34 Conversion a lot. Getting the matched quad from Laura made everything come together. My other quad was too hot! Also I worked around with some preamp tubes and feel pretty good overall right now about the tone.

This week I will jam with it in a band context and I can hardly wait. Now to take my few pedals and send off to Rooster to have him setup a pedal board for me as I have done this myself a few times and want to give him the a try this time. Love his boards. Waiting on the Strymon dTape delay and a few other goodies to run in a W/D/W rig for some massive goodness.

I will post some pics and clips here soon. Thanks again Steve for your help. I have played pretty much non stop all day today, and I am getting ready to go back to it right now!

I ended up back with a Rev. Blue after the TJ and liked it alot more. Now I'm wanting another TJ to try it with el34s. Thanks alot.

Glad everything got to you fast and that the result is good. Can't wait to hear some clips. If you have any questions or need anything, let me know. You got an assortment of pre's so you can try swapping things around and see what sounds good to your ears. You might try leaving the stock tubes in all positions except V1 and the PI and then try some of the new pre's in those positions first to see what you think and then go from there.

Post some clips!

Better keep your Winged C supply up Laura. Getting a lot of traffic directed your way.

I haven't purchased the AC7's yet. How do they compare to the AC5 tonally? I have to place my Ruby order too so if there is something worth adding, let me know.
