Hey guys

Well recently people on here recommended I use a boost to get my guitar to get a certain palm mute sound I was after (very death metally tone) so I woundered what would be some of the best ways of boosting/best pedals/rackmount units if avalible? I'm using a Diezel Herbert by the way.

I've heard some people say you can get really good boost sounds from EQs aswell as distortion pedals/tubescreamers?

Opinions please?

thanks :)

There was a hc amp forum trend about this a while back that had an mp3 comparing 10 or 15 boosts, from ultra cheap to klon expensive. More or less the digitech bad monkey sounded as good as any; and they're like $30 bucks so you really can't go wrong there. It's along the lines of a tube screamer, but has treble and bass knobs which is useful.

Awesome, thanks for a reply, anyone have opinions on using an EQ instead of a distortion pedal/tubescreamer for a boost?

I prefer using an EQ out front as it sounds more natural to me. Also, it lets me shape the tone better.

an EQ or Boost will work nicely, what type depends on how much you want to be able to shape your sound.

I use a Furman PQ-3 parametric EQ in front of my Cameron modded JMP. It allows me to tweak the sound extremely precise and allows for crazy amounts of boost if i want that. Parametrics work great and Graphic EQ's work great too!

Like Code001 said, the Fish n chips is a handy little EQ pedal and they're cheap too! I would start with trying one of those, and if you decide you want something even more tweakable and versatile then maybe move on to a Parametric EQ.

Hope this helps!

I have a herbert. I've been buying various boost/OD pedals lately to check out what I like the best. I had a Bad Monkey, a Maxon OD808 and OD9 and an HBE Power Screamer. The BM is a good buy at $40 new. I like the OD9 best of the ones I've tried and it is true by-pass. The OD808/HBE are very similar and were better than the BM but not a whole lot better to justify the price difference. I have an analogman modded OD9 coming soon. I have high hopes for that.

Thanks for the replys and help :) I shall look them up now.

MrDan666, sorry to be a hassble but what do you think of the PQ4 in comparrison to the PQ3? and is that their proper names becoase I can't find much about them on a search when I type in 'Furman PQ-3 parametric EQ'?

Its no hassle man, i love talking about this stuff :D

Ok well put simply the PQ-3 is 3band EQ and the PQ-4 is 4 bands of EQ. I would say the PQ-4 would be more tweakable due to it having that extra band to use, but also i do believe that they are pricier than the PQ3 and rarer too!

Since Dimebag's been gone, all the fanboys have been buying up the Furman PQ-3's and 4's and now theyre going for more money than they were say 3-4 years ago when i got mine. Still they are definitly worth the cash, and sometimes they pop up on ebay and you can get good deals!

IMO they are the best Parametric EQ for guitar rigs, they just sound awesome and i always have mine in every rig i use!

You will need a noisegate with either of the Furman PQ models, because obviously due to the fact you can boost each band +20db.. it does get a little noisey. I use a Rocktron Guitar Silencer which is great but a Hush, MXR Smartgate or ISP will do the job nicely.

Its a killer EQ if you can find one and get it for a decent price!!

Thanks for being so positive, I feel like I take the piss just coming on here commenting peoples gear and asking all my questions, I want to learn though.

Yeah man! When I looked them up, every other page is 'Dimebag Darrel gear this! Dimebag Darrel gear that!' didn't know he used one but that's a great insentive on the product/sold already I think

Yeah I plan on getting the rackmount ISP when I get the boost too.

Ok, all good thanks! one last thing, I presume they've discontiuned it from where you keep mentioning ebay? I'm from England so this may be a bit of a pain  what price did they retail around/could I expect do you think?

Thanks tons!

One thing to keep in mind is that a lot of multi-effects processors have them built in. The G-Major, G-Force, Replifex, Multivalve, and Xpression are good examples of these.

Ok well im from England too, i got hit with a little bit of import duty but all in all i think i paid around the figure of £150 ish.. that was including shipping and everything. Im not 100% sure though as we'r going back like 3 or so years ago now.

The PQ-3 and 4 are discontinued, i have the PQ-3 that has the black face and the red knobs and push switch on the front. Theres another one that has a toggle switch instead of a push button, and there is a green faced one which is the first model ever made. Theyre all pretty much the same to be honest.

If you're going for a PQ-4, the price may be a bit higher than a PQ-3 but its worth it if you can find it. I believe with the PQ-4, you can do anything you could on the PQ-3 with it. I also think the PQ-4's will gain more value in years to come, mainly due to the Dime fans hoarding them and they will be harder to find.

Hope this helps

Would my G-Force's EQ perform aswell though?

and thanks MrDan666! I've learnt lots from this thread :) *becomes ebay whore*

The G-Force would probably be superior. It has a lot of options in there.

If you're planning on using the parametric in the front end, then you cant use a G-Force or other rack effect, because they are in the loop. If you need a boost, be it para or graphic EQ, its gotta be in front so it boosts and shapes the gain.. if its in the loop, it will not have the same effect. In the loop you will most likely just gain more volume and it will shape the tone without boosting the input gain.

Haha, oh yeah. I forgot. We're talking about boosting the front end, not shaping the loop.

Thought something was missing there or would wounder why anyone buys anything for boosts if they have a decent multi effects unit...

Thanks again both of you  I'm on the look out for one, not seeing to have much luck...
