Happy Sunday Crew and Happy Fathers Day for those it applies to!

While carousing through various threads I ALWAYS see no matter what the amp, Fortin, Marshall and so on that people (more times than not) have some type of OD on the front end of their rig. Here on this forum, not so much. Any you Guys/Gals pushing your Diezel with any type of OD/Boost unit? From the hours of looking at clips I (doing my due diligence) have yet to see anyone bring that up.

Thanks in advance for your replies and fire away  !

Xotic Effects BB/AC/RC Booster OR to my surprise, Way Huge Pork Loin or Green Rhino!

Boosting a Diezel?? now thats just crazy talk...no need for...ts808(silver mod), ac boost, proTone clean boost, klon, sd1 all took some of the mojo away from the amp...made it sound less focused an mushy...But I do love me some tube screamers with every other amp I own except the Diezel

So much gain w/my Herbert...no use for a boost, per se, but a fuzz can sound great on channel 1. I also run an older Barb(er) EQ to shape things. The EQ pushes things over the top (even in channel 3). In certain situations (w/different amps) it pushes the pre-amp in a really nice way - and adds gain like a boost would.

On my Marshalls, I use a tubescreamer because I gives me that "Marshall sound".

On the Diezel, I don't really have a need for a boost. If I need more gain, I can switch to channel 4 on the VH4 for a solo, or just turn up on Channel 3.

I use an Ibanez TS 808 just to get another kind of Sound, like a simple lowcut.
And I use a Lehle Sunday Driver SW just as a boost for my singlecoils it works great because its a very linear sounding tool.

I sometimes use my Maxon OD808 in front of my VH4. The VH4 is one of the few amps that really works without a boost, as it is very tight. That being said though, putting an OD in front of the amp gives you a different kind of pick attack and tightness, so it is a different flavor that sometimes is quite cool. Especially for fast, down-tuned metal stuff the OD can be a good idea. One other thing that I discovered is that with CH2 on the VH4 (gain set fairly high) and the OD in front (drive very low, level quite high) you get something that is really quite similar to the unboosted CH3 and then again a different flavor that I really dig. My 2 cents...

i use a maxon OD-9 pro plus with my 100watt Diezel Stack, tightens it up a bit and adds some bite, dont really add any gain just crank the level and add some "tone"

with einstein on ch1 mode 3 or the vh4 ch3, I liked the gain around 4 with a screamer or whatever OD in the front, but it sounded best with the blue vintage maxon six band graphic equalizer I had
a mxr line driver or micro amp should work well

I find boosting VH4 unnecessary and think it sounds better without.

While I agree NO Diezel amp "needs" a boost. I mean, geesh these things are incredible and the amount of gain on tap is way more than one could possibly want. I can't imagine running my gain maxed, ever.

That said, I have run a boost, low/no gain increase, rather a tone shaping tool to simply give another option that is easy and switchable. Herbert's channel 2 has so many KILLER tonal options, yet adding a boost gives access to more than one at a time. Similarly channel 1 is awesome, yet a boost will add another flavor, that's all.

I have tried the same thing with my Hagen and had similar results. Boosts just add another tonal option to a channel. Again, not really any need for more gain, just using a boost as a tonal shaping tool to provide another easily accessible tone that is switchable.

Trying any pedal is fun, yet pedals with both treble AND bass controls will tend to give the best tone shaping results :D

Have fun!

I have a Line 6 Pod xT in front of the amp for wah and effects in general, but I run it at a very high level, so it works as a clean boost. The only thing I get from that is a lot less noise from the amp, since I don't have to turn up the gain that much.

You nailed it!
With Diezel amps you have to regard od pedals as tonal alternatives.
Without my ts 808 i couldnt do evh stuff. Ok i can but with the 808 its more the real deal.

i use a Suhr KokoBoost & A Modded Maxon TS9 for color w my Einstein. Thats about all. No boosting really needed.

Mostly on the channels 1 & 2 of my Hagen for tone shaping : clean boost for channel 1, light OD for a Marshallier sound on channel 2.
Channels 3 & 4 have enough balls for me.

I just recently tried CH 3 of my VH4 with a tubescreamer clone. While, as mentioned a couple of times before, the amp doesn't "need" a boost per se, I found the result pretty interesting. Now I'm thinking about leaving the pedal on the board just to have one more option if I need that extra beef.

Greets,

Till.

I like using my Suhr Koko Boost with toggle in the "high mids" position with channel 3 of my VH4. I have learned that the EP Booster isn't that great of a boost in front of a VH4 but is pretty awesome with a Friedman BE-100.

I'd agree with the others that most Diezel amps don't "need" an overdrive pedal but I've used an Xotic AC Booster for a volume boost during solos and that works very well.
