Boss DD-3: Tone suck?

Not in my experience. Like I said, I just got one home and it works pretty well for short to medium delays in front of the gain IMO. Maybe the loop would be better for it, but for what I use it for, it's perfect.
 
I have never had good results putting delays in front of high gain amps. Perhaps turned way down, or as Slash uses it, but not for the delay effect most of us seem to want. If the amp is the source of the distortion sound, use a loop. If pedals are the source of the distortion, put it in front, no loop needed.
 
I'm not sure about the DD-3, but I did notice that same problem with my DD-6. I mean, it's obviously not the best delay pedal out there, but for the price, you can't ask for too much.
