Episode #27: Boss FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz

The Boss FZ-2 is a very cool fuzz pedal. It's also somewhat of a rare bird, with only an estimated 35,000 units being produced. It has three modes: Mode 1 creates a bass driven sound, mode 2 is more hi-pitched, and mode 3 is a straight up gain boost. It's like having a two mode fuzz pedal and a EQ'able gain boost in the same pedal!

Modes 1 and 2 are both awesome. I prefer mode 1 in front of a clean amp, and mode 2 in front of a dirty amp. But, they both work in front of a clean or dirty amp. The tone control is very powerful with treble and bass cut and boost. You can even get an 'Entombed' like sound with the gain control maxed.

The Gain Boost mode is also a great thing to have on this pedal. You can use it in front of a clean amp to actually boost the loudness, and it does get loud! My preference is to use it to boost the gain of a dirty amp, making the amp dirtier and more distorted. The EQ and Gain knobs also function in this mode, so there is some added flexibility.

Overall, I am pretty impressed with the FZ-2 Hyper Fuzz. It has been one of my favorite of the bunch thus far, and kicks the FZ-5 to the curb. I found myself wanting to channel some Smashing Pumpkins with this on, and it is absolutely doable. The FZ-2 seems to go for around the $100 mark, but it's well worth it!

Holy cow you have a lot of boss pedals. What's ironic is that I don't own any boss pedals. You have some cool boss pedals that I would be happy to own. :)

I hope you do a review of the boss dm2 versus the dm3. :)

:) Yep, I do have quite a few Boss pedals. I'm trying to collect them all. It's a little silly I know, but I love them.

I'll definitely do a DM-2 vs DM-3 shootout.

I've had a Hyper Fuzz for a long time. Haven't used it for many years but it is cool. I always keep it around in case I need that sledgehammer. Sounds great on bass too.

The circuit is based on the Univox Superfuzz. I also have had one around forever....
