I don’t think the dyna comp has anything to do with EVH either.

The custom shop dyna comp was cool, but doesn’t sound like an original 76. It’s like 90% there, but nope. Same with the custom shop 74 phase 90. It’s close, but again, nope.
Problem is, all those chips are out of production and damn near impossible to find.

I got a bunch of NOS transistors, opto-couplers, and OpAmps from Small Bear a few years ago when I was really into building effects pedals.

Now I know who to go to. 🤣

I was excited for about 2 seconds until I heard that you can't get the badger plex anymore...

As for the comp pushing the circuit, how about for the Mattias Jabs early tone? Could you hear it giving the tone that bit of extra smack? I know he used hot pups and I cam essentially get it with a 2204 with the volume up and pre dialed back but sauce is sauce and I can always use more on my pork chops..

The BadgerPlex, The Clinch, are nothing more than copies of Mike Battle's circuit, lifted from the EchoPlex preamp section..

Clinch adds an output buffer, which was never part of the original circuit.

My Badgerplex has a buffer switch and I rarely use it. Notice the original echoplex knob, haha. It adds tone.

My echoplex sn is 10880. It’s an early one with a black deck and a more round motor like the tube EP2’s. I’ve owned a few and this one has always sounded different. It’s more compressed and does add some noticeable gain. I have another echoplex, but it doesn’t work so I saved it for parts. Even broken echoplexes sell for $500+

I put it away yesterday afte playing it for an hour so you will notice I moved the tape away from the heads.

How much gain does it add? I’ve an EP3 and EP1. They both sound amazing, but neither seems to add any gain to my sound. I haven’t tried yet any other Echoplex’s though

It's not a lot, but it's noticeable. Like adding another .5-1.5 on the gain knob. The compression helps as well.

Nice! I still wanna get an EP2 and maybe will have to try a few other EP3’s and 1’s. They do make my amps sound better even without any delay active, but I didn’t notice gain with mine, which is actually why I bought them in the first place lol, but at least I have with them a beautiful delay (that I dial in to be more like a reverb) and a subtle tone enhancement

Yeah, the stock circuit adds very little, if any gain to the signal.

What it does is impart a very interesting coloration/shift in the mid frequencies.

Try out a space echo. They sound glorious.... and have none of the noise that an echoplex has, yet all of the tape delay goodness.

I had SN 24373 and it had a different top cover. It was another good unit. I sent it to Chris Merren for a service and to bias the heads, etc. It still wasnt as good as the one I kept. I had an EP4 and it was just okay. lol

Yeah I’ve heard others say they like them even more too. More expensive also. I got into this rabbit hole just for boosts, but now it’s for their actual intention lol, although I like dialing them in for a more reverb-like effect, but I’m guessing the Space Echo will be as good as you say for that too

The space echo doesn't really add much gain unless you turn up the input volume knob and really drive the amp.

I just found a 20 year old pic with a bunch of tape delays. There is an EP4 at the top left.
