Boss NS-2

I have had the Boss Noise Suppressor for a while now and I am just getting into putting it into the loop of the amp. I am good with the loop, but I just noticed that it has a 9V in and a 9V out. Is there a benefit to using both? And if I do use both, can I plug both into a power supply?

9 V DC OUT jackWhen an AC adapter is used, you can connect a PCS-20A parallel DC cord (optional) to supply power to effects processors and other PSA adaptor-compatible gear.* Power cannot be supplied from the DC OUT jack when the NS-2 is running on batteries.* If you use the PCS-20A to supply power to devices that are compatible with PSA adaptors, make sure that the total current consumption of all devices (including the NS-2) does not exceed the maximum output current of the PSA series unit you’re using.
DC IN jackAccepts connection of an AC Adaptor (PSA series; sold separately). By using an AC Adaptor, you can play without being concerned about how much battery power you have left.* We recommend that you keep batteries installed in the unit even though you’ll be powering it with the AC adaptor. That way, you’ll be able to continue a performance even if the cord of the AC adaptor gets accidentally disconnected from the unit.* Use only the specified AC adaptor (PSA-series).* If the AC adaptor is connected while power is on, the power supply is drawn from the AC adaptor.

I use one out front with boost and overdrive in the pedal loop.

I think that I was using my NS-2 incorrectly even though I followed the 4CM'ish method that Boss shows on their site. This hooks the NS-2 in front of the amp and in the loop. It seems to suck a ton of tone out. What did I do wrong?

I hate NS-2's. I would recommend going with a decimator. Night and day.

Get a ZUUL... it allows "3CM"... just need a splitter (one goes to key input on Zuul, other goes to your signal chain), they run Zuul in loop as you would the NS-2.

I don't use a noise gate in the loop because my amps are not making a lot of noise. The only time I really need it is when using a boost or overdrive in front of the amp. I get better results using boost and overdrive in the loop of the noise gate.....and everything out front. Loop I pretty much only use for delay.
After trying a lot of other gates the Boss works fine for my application. The slight tone changes is not a issue with a boost or overdrive being used.

Could be... I don't have experience with that one. That would be another choice if the case. Just really like my Zuul.

I tried an NS-2 in the past and didn't like the tone change it created. Wasn't a huge problem, just bothered me. Much happier with the Zuul... much pricier but IMO worth it.

the 4CM is loop dependent. Meaning it works better with some amp's loops than others. It worked great with my JSX. I believe it actually works best with a serial loop.

Same. I gave less than $50 used for my NS-2 around 15-16 years ago and it's still going strong and kept things dead silent at every venue I've played. Subtle changes are lost when you're cranking a high gain tube amp through a PA. I've never been one to need the latest and greatest. I'm of the "if it ain't broke" camp, haha. Still using my 20 year old Fulltone wah and TU-2 I got around the same time too.

I used the 4cm with my 6505+ and it worked great. Sometimes I would forget my amp was on until I bumped into my guitar. Having said that I switched to Zuul which is one knob and works great.

This is how I use mine...no tone suck.

Guitar to NS2 input.
NS2 Send to non time based pedals in front of amp or front of amp.
Amp FX Send to NS2 Return
NS2 output to front of time base pedals in FX loop, pedals into amps fx return.

I've never hooked it up that way. I'm going to try it.

I'm going to be trying a boost into a overdrive into the amp and GEQ in the loop. Trying to get a NMV amp as modern sounding as possible.
