Why not...

Here's an '85 with the typical features:

JRC4558dd chip. Black stripe diodes. Physically smaller capacitors, and the bright green caps.

Here's an '81 with some difference:

NEC4558C chip. Yellow stripe diodes. Physically larger caps in some places. The army green caps.

In between '81 to '85, you might find some with a mix of these features.

I saw an old thread on one of the Marshall forums about modding the MIT ones to sound as good as the MIJs, cap changes mostly, although one mod was a clipping diode change to germanium. Might have to buy a MIT and fuck around and find out ! Fuckin' SQUARHEAD. LOL

And for completeness, here's a pic of one of my Taiwanese SD-1s:

JRC4558dd chip. Black stripe diodes. Silver caps instead of bright green. Only circuit difference I think is the jumpers toward the top of the board. That's related to the switch from the old type of power supply to the newer (much more convenient) type.

Thanks for all your input fellas,
I just found this nice 1981 unit with the 4558C chip, the price was very decent too so I jumped on it.

Just out of curiosity how much did you pay? I've been on the hunt for an OD3 but the prices have kept me away ??

Hey Dan, it was 120 bucks
I guess it’s about double the price of a new one…
Maybe I’m nuts, I guess we’ll find out…

Looking to buy a very early 80s Boss SD-1 with JRC4558D chip or even better, a JRC4558C.
I found one with a JRC4558DD chip and someone told me it’s not as good as the ‘D’ or ‘C’ chip…
If someone can talk some sense into me that they are the same or whatever, it will put my mind at ease??
I have 2 Boss SD-1’s... Any value?
