Breaking in New Speakers

I'm not a hurry to record or gig at all. Just more curious. I'll just let them break in with natural playing time!
That’s what I’ve done always and before you know it a few years have past lol. I’ve never had a new speaker(s) that I thought were so bad sounding that they need a break in ASAP though

I have done it a few ways, I placed the cab towards a carpeted floor and let 'er rip, as well as using a solid state power amp with an ipod and just play spotify while im at work with moderate volume. Seems to work for the inital loosening, nothing beats years of gigs though.

ive had new cabs and speakers before and never experienced this magical speaker break in people talk about, always seemed more like a convenient excuse as to why someone isnt digging their new cab :dunno:
It's because it's a very gradual process that happens over years of use. You haven't noticed a little high end roll off on some of your cabs over the years? Like that annoying high end sizzle that some V30 loaded cabs have?

No, I’ve had a few cabs 20 years now and the others are plenty broken in and I can’t say I’ve ever said this cab sounds different than it did. Speaker break in was always a topic at hcaf and I remember waiting for the big transformation of the 4-5 new cabs me and my band mates of the time got and that never happened. I’m sure every speaker is different and I’m not saying speakers never change but a cab going from shit to spectacular I’ve never seen

I completely believe you. For me, it was pretty subtle. Was not shit to spectacular like at all. I didn't notice with the Avatar cab (maybe he breaks his speakers in?) but I did with the Splawn.

Were the cabs you bought pristine brand new never played? Just asking. Your shit definitely sounds good.

I used an Axe-FX to send a 30-40hz sine wave through the speakers for 10 hours or so. Not super loud, but enough I could see the speakers move and feel the floor vibrate.

Thats called loss of hearing

I played my nephews bass through mine for about an hour or so.. done.

I think it's a bit overrated..
The Celestion Website pretty much said to hammer it with a clean tone with a loud amp 1 time and it's pretty much there..

FWIW, I don't think 24 hours is nearly enough to really break in a speaker.

Second, I don't think that if you don't like the speakers when new, you'll be amazed by the same broken in speaker.

No actually, cause on my sound sytsems I don't notice this at all, but I buy new speakers for them all the time. Same with listening on earbuds and shit, I can still hear all the high end in the world. Nothing has changed as far as listening to my favorite albums, they still sound the same to me. It's just my 4x12 cabs, which are both loaded with V30's.

Ya, going from shit to spectacular is a bit of a stretch. It's not like the character of the speaker changes, it just mellows a bit, the spikier frequencies and that top end sizzle that a lot of speakers have tend to attenuate over years. I've got a couple 4x12's that are 14 and 16 years old and i've noticed this effect on the Boogie cab the most. Which is the one I use the most.
