Eric,

Since you appear to be the resident Scumback expert, I have a few questions. I am considering either putting a pair in my TM 2x12 (replacing a WGS Vet 30 and WGS ET65), or I may be getting a TM 4x12, and putting some combination in there.

I was sticking with V30/Vet30s for a while, but I think I am growing tired (literally) of the midrange.

It seems that mixing G12H30s and G12-65s is a pretty popular thing in 2x12s and 4x12s, and I tend to like darker, thicker tones for OD, but still have plenty of sparkle for clean, so I had been thinking of trying Scumback's version of these in the 2x12 - using a M75-HP-LHDC (his equivalent of the G12-65) and either a H55 or H75 (which I understand are supposed to be like the G12H30) - not sure whether I would need the lower bass response of the 55 vs. the 75 or not - maybe in a 2x12 I would want the H55, but in a 4x12, maybe the H75?

Anyway, do you have any experience with these particular models? I assume that your 4x12 is loaded with the M75 - Greenback style vs. the M75-LHDC G12-65 style, so wasn't sure if you had tried these.

Also, I know you said you actually liked the WGS ET65 - I'm wondering how it compares with the M75-LHDC.

Thanks,
Rick

In a 2x12, I'd go w/ a M75 / H75 combo. I tried that combo out at Tone Merchants this weekend, and it was great! Gets you great bite, thick tone, and tight bottom end. But it's not too much bite like a V30. AJust the right amount.

The M75LHDC vs M75...I'd highly recommend the M75 over it. It's by far my favorite Scumback speaker...as is everyones. I'd recommend 4 of the 65W Scumbacks in a 4x12 any day of the week! Huge tone..great clarity, awesome frequency response that doesn't push anything across the spetrum too high. I'd say no to H55s in a 4x12. Will have WAYYYY too much low end. A H55 and H75 wouldn't be bad. The H75 / M75 is the better combo though.

I think 4 M75-LHDC's will be too dark.... I play ALL sorts of music types through my 4x12 w/ 4 65W M75s...and it just kills. The m75 / h75 combo is a killer one too if you want a bit more bite on the top end. I will have 1 2x12 w/ M75 / H75 combo..and my 4x12 w/ 4 65W M75s...

Brad was talking to me Saturday about having a "Scumback Speakers" sub forum here. But if Eric is going to take over answering all the questions, I may just have him handle that. ;)

Thanks Eric.

RA/Rick...you could always email me if you have questions. I'm pretty brutally honest...which I think Eric can now attest to after hearing how the Scumbacks came to be on Saturday afternoon. I'll bet you're sorry you listened to that long tale, huh, Eric?

  Will do. Thanks. I'm just coming to the conclusion after all these years that I really don't think I'm a Vintage 30/EL34 kind of guy, even though my heart tells me that V30s and EL34s are the speakers and tubes I should be using, my ears tell me that both of these things have too much of the nearly-painful midrange that absolutely drives me nuts! I know that's the "classic combination", but I'm just not getting into it. I had a VHT EL34 head and V30 cab for years and loved it, but I just can't make that work with my Eggie now. I already ditched the EL34s in my Eggie head, and now I've pretty much decided that the V30-style speakers I have must go!

In fact, that's about the only thing holding me back from getting an Eggie TM 412 - it comes loaded with 4 V30s, so I know right off the bat, I would have to rip those things out, sell 'em on eBay and then buy 4 new speakers...I think I would rather just buy 2 new speakers for my 212 and eventually buy another low-boy style 212 to get my head up off the ground a little more (really, the main reason I am wanting a 412 - the extra height).

I want big ballsy low end, the requisite amount of mid-range bite, and nice sparkly high end, but I am really tired of the "cocked-wah" mid range that I feel like I get from V30s and CL80s.

That story....was funny as hell...long yes...but still funny!!! :) If you need a mod for the Scumback forum...let me know. I'd be happy to answer questions. I've played nearly all of the speakers you have...I think there's one or two I haven't yet. BTW...that 1x12 cab sounded awesome.

SHould have told you ....you were surrounded by IT geeks that afternoon...I work for Cisco...Matt is a java developer...my buddy mike was a sysadmin for servers in the past... You were definitely in likeminded company!

Well Jimmy, shall we have a go at a Scumback forum?

Sure, what the hell. You're already wearing the T-shirt (I'm sure cuz you were out of clean clothes by Saturday!), and Eric is answering all the questions for me.

I guess I could be the obligatory figurehead... LOL.

Just kidding...it's an honor to be asked, so fire it up, Brad!

Hell, I managed a ComputerLand from 84-91, then I was a video system engineer for another 12 years. My last big install was the video/audio lab at MI in Hollywood 4 years ago. I've still got two editing systems in storage, one at MI w/Allen (the video instructor), and one sitting on my desk... oh, and that pesky programming degree I got in 84...forgot about that.

No wonder you guys stuck around...like minded indeed! How about that whack job I lived 126 feet from, eh? Sheesh! I guess I had the last laugh, though...although it cost me $3k in lawyer fees.

I think the Cl-80s and very balanced. I don't hear annoying mids at all. I also don't find annoying mids at all with EL34s or E34Ls.
